Running a wireless router off a port on a wired router.

Hi all,

I have a D-Link DL-604 "wired" router set up with my RoadRunner. I want to use one of the ports to hardwire a network cable to a remote part of the house. On this cable, I want to hook up a wireless router, for network access in this remote section. XP Pro/ XP Home on all involved systems.

1) Is there any problem with doing it this way? I know it may not be the most elegant approach, but I think it should work. Any special configuations needed?

2) I need everything off of this remote network cable to have internet access only, not access to the network shared by the other three ports of the "wired" router. What security steps do I need to take to do this?

Thanks a lot in advance! I'm kinda rusty and weak in networking, so help would be appreciated.

-LC

1) It will work fine, i had this set up for a while. You need to remember to turn off DHCP on the router.

2) Depends on whatelse you have running on your network. Do you have any type of filter content setup?

GZ3,
Just to clarify, turn off the DHCP on the wireless router, right? And no, I don't have any filters setup for content.

What's the easiest way to keep this line off my file and printer sharing with the other three ports on the router?

You can leave DHCP on on the wireless router. I'm doing the same thing with my netgear wired router and my belkin wireless router. Works fine. Just connect the wireless router's WAN (aka Internetport to one of the wire router's LAN ports.
