| HELP!!!...Sharing Printer XP & Win98se
Hello all!. I need some help.
It's like this; I've got 3 pc's (2 xp & 1 98se), connected through a NG314 Router via cable modem to I/net. All 3 connnect fine and work.
The XP pc's are sharing a printer installed on the master pc (mine), and work great. All three PC's have the same workgroup name. The XP PC's can see all PC's.
The Problem: The wife's pc (98se). Everytime she wants to print...the cable has to be connected to her PC.
While this is a relatively easy task...the comments ()&#)$)&__*R)_R(E+*T)((*&^&&#&^%^%$@^%&^), about computers and technology are just not worth the hassle. If you catch my drift.
So the million dollar question:
How do I get her's (the one who must be obeyed), Win98se PC to see the printer installed on the main XP pc (mine), so she can print?
This is real important, as you can well imagine.
Thanks much!

Well, although Win2k and Windows XP can share drivers, Windows 9x/ME cannot. You'll need to install the printer driver in WIn98 for that specific printer. After installing the printer driver in Win98, just delete the printer that appears in printer windows in Control Panel and then add the network printer... And to load the driver, just click on have disk and you will see the driver printer available in the list since you installed the driver previously... This has been the easiest method for me so far...

Welcome to TECHIMO oceanview!
You stated the XP computers can see all computers. Can the Win98 computer see & access anything on a WinXP computer?
If not, you need to logon to the Win9x8 computer with a user name that is on the XP computers. If your Win98 computer Autologons but you need to logon with a different username, then choose Start button, then choose Log of user. |

I've only got one PC with XP, and that's the one the printer's connected to - the other 4 PC's in the house run win98SE.
And they all access the printer no problem. I use a switch, not a router, but I can't see why that would make it different. But it may be an issue; I wouldn't really know.
I agree with NDC, as when I set each one up, I used the printer install CD-ROM to load the win98SE drivers on the win98SE PC's. WinXP had a generic driver for my printer (HP Deskjet 610C), so doesn't use the same drivers.
So my suggestion would be to delete the printer on your wife's PC, then reload it from there and use the install disk drivers for win98SE.
If it's a router issue then dvnt1 will be able to help with it.
And, welcome to TechIMO!
edit: I'm curious - anyone know why connecting the net would allow it to print?? Doesn't sound like a driver issue... | |

Actually, after playing around...it turned out to simply be a case of "loggin in" to the 98se pc. After I did that, bingo...it could see the other XP pc's and then I added the printer which it found on my XP pc.
Needless...to say all is well...the one who must be obeyed...just looked and said "why didn't you do that before".....no respect...I tell you....
Thanks for all the input...and nice site...I'll be browsing some more.... |
