    lmhosts question

Can you put a local network host in an lmhosts file? Can you put its workgroup in there as well?

    Some thing like:

    \\hostname\ 192.168.5.100

I've used this for internet banner adds and such, but never for local network stuff.

    Thanks

    yeah just put
    hostname ip

    ie

    flashingcursor 192.168.8.74

ping flashingcursor would then resolve to that

You can also use the hosts file as well though the LMHosts was created specifically for IP to NetBIOS name resolution/mapping. Hosts still works. That's what I used the first time I had a problem and needed resolution help and just have never used lmhosts since.

The internet ads your blocking would typically be done in the hosts file, though it sounds like the same is true as above for lmhosts if your using a FQDN in LMHosts to block popups etc..

I'm not concerned about adds or resolving names like a unix host file (which I'm quite fond of on *nix boxes) NetBIOS is what I'm trying to resolve. What I have is a remote computer on a vpn. I'm using wins (see thread below) for a browse lists in "My Network Places"-- works great except... The remote office (our electrical engineers home) has a computer that is not part of the vpn/workgroup nor does it grab browse lists from wins-- he would like to be able to see his wifes computer in "My Network Places", but he would NOT like to have his wifes computer showing up in "My Network Places" on the other side of the vpn.

How do you put the netbois name/workgroup/IP in LMHOSTS? So he can see his wifes machine without it being on the master browse list (wins).

For me this is not a problem (shouldn't be for an electrical engineer...) I would simply map network drives or browse by \\host\share.

Any thoughts? the lmhosts file is not very well commented or documented by MS.

    Thanks

    I think I found a kb article [LINK="http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;101927"]here[/LINK]

Actually the lmhosts has examples right there in the file. Hosts works just as well. That was point above. You can do IP to NetBIOS mappings in the hosts file. Anyway, if you feel like using LMHosts instead then by all means use it. Won't resolve that computer name any faster than the hosts file but obviously it wouldn't be any slower. Anyway, just have him edit the lmhosts or give you the IP and you can edit yours, save it and send it to him to replace his. It's pretty straightforward but in case the example and documentation in the actual file are not enough (I delete all that garbage by the way) then just go below the (to me) exhaustive documentation and type the IP, hit tab and type the computer name. That's all there is to it, using hosts or lmhosts. Save without a file extension. The example in C:|windows\system32\drivers\etc is a sample. Couple of ways to do this. Typically I would just put quotations around lmhosts and make sure the Save as type is All Files. That's it. It will work fine if he has WIN's information in his TCP/IP properties. I can't remember the sequence. It used to be a test question back in the NT4 days. I think for resolution it is (or was) lmhosts, hosts, WINS, DNS, then b-Node broadcasts. DNS is probably higher in the pecking order nowadays.

    Update:

We are able to see him and he us-- regardles of lmhosts or hosts it still resolves like a unix hosts file. He can go to the address bar and: \\wifes_comp\share

What I was really hoping was to have it show up in "My network places" and have her show up in our workgroup on his machine only.

I guess he will have to get used to doing it the right way..... \\host\share
