| Sync computers across network
I have a standard network automatically configured by a router at home. THe router provides both wired and wireless access to the internet. The network consists of one wireless laptop and 4 to 5 wired computers and one network printer too. All computers have access to the internet and shared files of other computers on the network.
The problem is that one of the users of the computers isnt really the best at telling unsecured content to secured trustworthy content. Right now, i have to isolate the computer from the network due to the kind of viruses and spyware on the laptop (wireless). Its a very high spec laptop and its really become useless due to the kind of content on the computer.
I dont think there is anyway to actually repair the files on the network or resore it to a secure computer, so i think the only solution is to actually format the computer and make it fresh once again.
Now, to prevent this from happening again to the laptop or to any other computer already on the network i need to find a way where I can control the virus scans and security issues related to each computer on the network. I want to do something similar to a scholl network or workplace network where they have scheduled scans and moniter firewalls etc. This way i can make sure that all computers are up to date at the same time and rely on one computer for security.
Is there anyway this is possible??

schools usually use a centeral manage software that can cost some money.
I would start making different accounts with different premissions that will limit what a user can do (running, installling, etc) |

Yeah, i could start making new accounts, but then again - its not my computer i dont really have any right over what the user installs or modifys on their computer. All i am worried about is the security of their computer and the network since they are connected to the network.
Also, by making restrictions on user accounts can also limit the user to a certain extent, he/she unsecured content can still be access via the internet.
I was thinking more along the lines of small file server only for security. It will only have the main security software on there such as MacAfee and what not...
However, im not exactly sure if this would work out in the end. Here is what i plan to do:
1. Install one copy of McAfee on the file server which will be connected to the network and have access to the internet to recieve updates etc.
2. Log onto each computer on the network and map the harddrive/folder on where McAfee is installed on the file server.
3. Configure the computer for the McAfee on the file server to be the default virus scanner/firewall protection module.
4. Test it out by making a full virus scan of the remote computer using McAfee from the file server Via the network -------[THIS IS WERE IM NOT SURE IF MCAFEE WILL SCAN THE FILE ERVER IT IS INSTALLED ON OR THE REMOTE COMPUTER WHICH I AM RUNNING IT FROM]
Once all this is complete, any updates will be installed onto the fileerver mcafee and then automatically updated on the other network computers once they have made a virus scan.
Also, for schduled scans, i can configure this on each computer seperately.
The only thing that is stopping me is probaly number 4...Im not sure on which computer the scan will take place, the one i run it on/or the file server in which it is installed..???
Apart from this, i cant think of any other reasons to why this wont work.. |

You will want to install McAfee on each machine for the best protection if you want to go that route as most virus scanners scan the programs running in the memory
Having a sever with a antivirus scanning a share drive wont do much
If you serious about wanting something like this and want to put down the cash, Trend Mirco has a client that will update all machines on a network from a server. This is mainly for business tho.
If you are having a problem with a user on a network and they can not control the surfing habits i suggest you remove it from the network. Or depending on your router you block access to certain sites that are issues |
