Laptop modem (and sound card) ceased to exist

I've got an Inspiron 1100 here, with integrated modem and sound. Neither card shows up in device manager. I even downloaded fresh drivers from Dell's website, but get the error message "No compatible hardware found. Setup will now exit." I even cracked the case open to make sure there was no visible damage. I can't find any problems, but I can't get the system to find the hardware either. My only guess is that both of these cards are dead. They may even be connected - I'm not sure. Any ideas?

You mean they just completely dissapeared with no signs of degredation or decrease in preformance?

do the devices show up in device manager?

Anything with a ! next to it?

As far as I can tell. It belongs to my friend's sister, so I didn't get to watch it happen.

Nope, nothing shows up in device manager. No ! or anything.
