    2k machine can't see drives in XP machine. Ok reverse way.

    Setup;

    Box 1; 2k tower
    Box 2; XP Pro Laptop

    Both with same username & password
    Both have drives set for shareing
    No firewall

    2k machine can see the XP Laptop, but only the name of the computer. It sees' no drive leters.
    XP Laptop can see the 2k tower AND the drives.
    BOTH access the internet ok.

    Router/Gateway; Westell VersaLink 327W (wireless DSL modem/router).

    When I click on the computer name under 'Computers Near Me' it returns;
    "***** is not accessible. Access is denied".
    Copyright protection & Intellectual property my ass. All you elitists want is more money & power. Enough is enough!

    Install the netbeui protocol on both machines and see what happens.

    BINGO!!!

    You need to install the NETBEUI protocol on the W2K machine. NETBEUI is an option on the XP Machine.

    I only have one machine running W2K now, but that was the answer. (BTW, that's one out of 17. )

    ok, that's really wierd since you should not need the netbeui protocol. tcp/ip should be fine as netbios should pick up everything.

    I am currently having the same problem. I set up my server ( win2k server) as an active directory. I have my roomate on a wireless connection (laptop) and have currently setup a name, password, permissions, and a shared folder (all of c: for testing purposes) His firewall is off and he can get internet through the router. We can see each other on the network but "do not have permissions to access this computer" according to windows. I have installed netbui on mine but windows xp does not have the option? any other thoughts?

    thanks

    if you set up an active directory domain controller on a windows 2000 server machine, you do not want netbeui at all. but you do need the machine you want to access the active directory domain to be added to the domain. if it is windows xp home, then that will not happen.

    you can share out files and folders using the guest account, but the fact that the machine does not have an account on the domain will give you some problems. it will always ask for user credentials.

    also, ensure you set both the share permissions and the security permissions to whatever account you are using to authenticate the user for access to the share.

    you need to use the convention domain\username when entering the user name on the authentication windows when accessing the folder as well. just typing the user name will not work if the machine you are trying to access from is not a member of the domain.

    My roomate does have xp home.... So now, if i read your statements correctly, I need to enable my guest account and have him sign on to that? What if I stripped off the active directory? If he signs on the guest account will he have any decent access? If you couldnt tell already, I am relatively ignorant when it comes to networks.

    thanks for the quick reply

    basically you can avoid using the guest account by using the regular user account and password like before, but without the 2k server machine being an active directory domain controller. once you upgrade the machine to a domain cpontroller it ceases being a workgroup machine and can really only communicate with other machines on the domain.... but the home machine might be able to authenticate by explicitly stating the domain and user name, it will never be able to seemlessly communicate. stripping the role as a domain controller and using the guest account would allow the seemless share you are probably looking for, of course witht he dangers of having that kind of anonymous user account on the machine.
