| Netgear router with Verizon DSL...
I have a semi-complex problem. My first question is: does the type of router you have have anything to do with the ISP? I was helping my friend install a Netgear wireless G router, and we found out that his service had been cancelled. The problem is not fixed, but Verizon mentioned that they "do not support Netgear." I just wondered what that meant.
Anyway, I hooked up the router as the instructions had told me, and it did not work. The computer detected no connection to the Internet whatsoever. I tried using the Verizon CD given to my friend upon subscribing, and it said his computer used a USB connection; not the Ethernet connection. But he has an Ethernet port! I checked ti see if it's working properly, and it was. It's on-board. Any idea what the problem might be?
Last question: When I started up Internet explorer, the set up menu came up for the router... except it only allowed static IP routing. Is that normal? It didn't give any other option, and I wasn't sure what to put in under IP address... 192.168.1.1? Why can't I just use DHCP? Does anyone know how to set up a Netgear wireless router?
Thank you all.

Alot of ISP dont support any third party routers or accerioes that share out networks as its not their equipment.
I know some people with Verizon connections were given a modem/router combo equipment. Have you tried just pluging the modem directly to the computer? Quote: |

Yes, the service was returned.
I tried connecting directly to the modem, and it did not work. Actually, this post really isn't about the Netgear router, I suppose it's more about why the Ethernet port doesn't work on my friend's computer. It''s worked before, I was told it worked for games and some such, so why is it all of a sudden not compatible? It shows that it is working properly in the device manager... Quote: |

Do not support as in not compatible, do not support as in they just don't like the company... et cetera.

do not support = don't ask us questions about it because we aren't going to tell you even if we know
BTW, what is the brand and model of the modem device? It may be a router/modem combo or maybe just a modem.

Hmm... Well, I'm not at his computer right now to be certain, but it's a westell Wirespeed B90-210015-04, as I recall. The Router... Netgear 54 Mbps Wireless Router Model WGR614.
I still think it has something to do with his computer, though. The Verizon software "detected" that he should use the USB connection, but he definitely has an Ethernet port. I think the problem lies somewhere in there.
Thank you for the replies. |
