Laptop will not pickup an address.
Last week I setup WEP 128bit on my home Linksys WRT54G Wireless router. In one room I have 3 computers hooked up to a switch, that is then hooked up to a Linksys WET54G Wireless bridge. I setup the wireless bridge for WEP 128bit and got it to work with my router.
The problem I am having is that when I went and setup my laptop, it will not pickup an IP address from teh router. I setup the laptop the same way as I setup the bridge using the same keys and encryption method. THe laptop is able to connect to the router, but it cannot get an IP address, so it always says "Limited or no Connectivity" even though the windows network window says it is connected to the network.
I tried setting the laptop up with static IPs, but I was unable to get it to connect to the internet. I made sure that the DNS servers and every were input correctly.
Does anyone know why the Laptop may be having problems recieving an IP address from the router?
Thanks,
-Biz

when you connect to the router with dhcp, what ip address do you get (169 or something else) via dhcp can you ping the router? how bout an internet ip address (like google 72.44.207.99 ) Also...with a static ip, can you access google via ip address....how bout pinging the router then? What static ip are you assigning, and are you sure you're not assigning an ip already in use on the network? The last thing I can think is that maybe, just maybe you have a duplicate mac address on the network...(i really doubt it, but I guess it's possible)

Have you tried to /release and /renew ur IP ?? flush DNS ?

I know its not a duplicate MAC address. The laptop will connect to the router just fine without the encryption enabled. As soon as I turn it off, teh laptop immedialty gets an address.
With DHCP, the laptop won't get an ip address at all. So there is no way to ping to router or go to google.
The static IP I assigned I made sure none of the other computers were taking up that IP address. With the static IP windows says I am connected to teh router but I can still not ping the router or access teh internet.

What os are you using?
And if its xp, are you using the software that came with the card or are you using the built in wireless manager.

Assuming you have xp w/ sp2 and are using the wireless zero config service (xp's wireless controls) turn on the encryption on your router, go start --> control panel --> network connection --> right click wireless connection and go to properties, wireless networks, and delete the profile for your home network. click ok. right click your wireless connection again, double click your network, it should ask for your password.

It is running on Xp Home.
I have tried using both the Windows software and the software from teh card's website. The card is a D-Link Tri-band A, B, and G.

March 29th, 2006, 11:46 PM #9That was the first thing I did. But when I doublelick the new network, it says that the connection was lost.

try this...disable the wireless network card first (right click, disable) then do what i said above, then re-enable and start from scratch!
The only thing I can think is that it's trying to use wep 64 bit or wpa when it shouldn't be. Either that or the profile is having issues which should be fixed by disabling the card before deleting everything

March 29th, 2006, 11:49 PM #11I have also done that. I have gone as far as unistalling the card drivers, and disabling the card. Then have Windows XP redect teh card like as if it was a new hardware. I then tried it using the Windows Drivers, and that didn't work. I then installed the drivers from the D-Link website and still does not work.

if you can support wpa on your network I'd deffinately recommend that....128 bit wep can be cracked with packet injection in just a few mins
Never had the energy to figure it out myself but i know people who have. lol. cracked his neighbors wireless while he waited for comcast to set up his internet in his new appartment. lol wpa-psk takes a few hours. the new wpa 2 is much better (not sure about times or if it's even been cracked yet!)
/edit -- fixed typo's

So you recommend an encryption that is easily broken?
I thought WEP was better than WPA?

no WEP is weaker than WPA
WEP is old and busted
Also do you have the latest firmware and drivers for the wireless card and router?
sr71000 search google video for cracking wep. they have videos of dudes doing it with apple software and whatnot.
