| Can't connect to the internet without my router
In my ongoing search to find my problem with firewalls, and several topics later, I took someone's advice and decided to just get rid of my router and link directly ot my external modem. Problem is, for some odd reason I can't. When I go straight to my modem it just doesn't work. The lights come on, but it just isn't home.
In "My connections" it doesn't even show there IS a connection. I thought I had to configure a connection, but when I go to that (useless) wizard, it tells me unless I'm running PPPoE (And I'm not) then it "Automatically configures" or whatever. Well it isn't doing that.
I remember asking the guy who installed my DSL if there's some way I can bypass the router (When I was trying it out I noticed I couldn't ping google from the command prompt) and he told me he wouldn't reccommend it because if the ISP noticed me doing something like that they would shut me off. Why I don't know. Anyway, I thought he ment permanently, but now that I've completely disregarded his advice and it just isn't working, I'm wondering if it's some kind of automatic cryption or something? Can the ISP tell if I have a router hooked up and deny me internet if I do, or is there some extremely simple procedure that I'm just not seeing?
My modem is some Motorola that doesn't seem to have any model number or actually seem to exist at all (according to Motorola's website).
My Router is a D-Link DI-604, and all this is connected through Ethernet.
And also, before everyone goes on about opening ports and DMZ: Tried it, and in short none of it works. Period. So I'm sure that my only choice is to get rid of the router altogether.
Thanks for any help.

You're sure that your DSL doesn't use PPPoE? I've never seen a DSL system that didn't. |

I am having this exact same problem. Trying to upgrade my linksys G to the dlink router. Dlink does not for some reason allow you to install it wireless. When I try to connect via directly to my modem. I get nothing. If you figure this out, please send me an email... My new dlink just sits there in the box until I can figure it out... tardawgs@tds.net Quote:
