| One Router can connect to Internet, Another Can't.
I was in the market for a firewall, since Network security has become a priority.
I ended up picking this "feature-nice" product up at fry's: http://shop.resellerratings.com/xPC-...T-3~VK-3070197
Problem is, I can't get the thing to recognize my internet connection "Cox Hi-Speed Cable." - While I have another router that can utilize the connection with no problem. http://shop.resellerratings.com/?key...kin_id=3056829
I've tried multiple configurations: With the Firewall in between the Router and Modem, without the Router all-together and only the Firewall and modem, etc. In all instances, I can't get a good address from either of the WAN ports on the firewall. As stated before, the router has no problem identifying an address, and everything is resolved instantly.
I always do the correct power-cycle when switching configurations, 1. cable-modem, 2. Firewall, 3. Router, etc... So that isn't a problem. Both items are also configured to obtain an IP from the ISP also.
When everything is connected, Firewall and Router to the LAN, I can log onto both units without any problem. I have the router set to my local address of 192.168.1.2 and the firewall is 192.168.1.1. So address resolution conflict isn't a problem. Also, my router is providing the DHCP service, with the firewall (even though it can) is disabled.
Any suggestions on what I can do to get my firewall active on the internet? Whenever I run the "setup-wizard" on the firewall for the internet, it comes back with an error that it couldn't obtain a ISP IP address.
Any ideas?

Well,
Sorry to take so long to get back on this one. - Hit up the router again, on a couple of troubleshooting paths. Still no joy.
Thanks for the suggestion on the MAC address. I tried to "spoof" the MAC address of my computer, plus on another attempt - the MAC address of my original router that has no problem to connect to the net.
Unfortunately, nothing seems to work. When I drop a "static" IP addres, and mimic what the router that works has, it is able to report an "UP" connection to the ISP, but I'm unable to get online at any time.
All of my addressing is correct with my personal computer, as far as gateway and dns go... but nothing but headaches.
Thanks for the idea though, got me looking at a couple of paths to try. Anything else? |

might try these suggestions http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101209.asp
here's the products knowledge base http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/FVS124G.asp
you do need to make sure you have the modem set-up correctly then set-up the firewall and lastly connect the router. Because it sounds to me like you are never getting the firewall configured correctly to begin with
edit: you might also want to update your firmware, I noticed in the release notes it said there were some connection fixes in the new releases. Just a thought

Thanks for the suggestion.
Wow - my life's been busy as of late. I haven't had time to do all the things I've needed to get a lock down on. I'm out of town right now, and as soon as I get back, I will try the firmware suggestion that you gave. Thanks for the ideas.
Hopefully, at least, it'll give me some troubleshooting options to figure it out.
I've included my idea for what I would like the layout of the network to be. Please let me know if I'm way off base, or the setup should work in theory. Cronstructive criticizm is highly welcomed.

Sorry about the file. I posted it, and immediately updated it... Link should be fine now.
Yeah.... Actually my network is alot larger than what I've posted, with a couple of WAPs, a proxy server, and everything in between... But right now my problem sits in the router and firewall area. |

you should disable dhcp on the middle router and have it act just as a switch. If you can, you should just drop the middle router entirely. |

That was always an option... But the middle router has been the one assigning addresses to all my wireless clients. Been doin' a pretty decent job of it too.
So, you're suggesting to have the netgear dual wan product conduct all the DHCP needs of the network, and change the middle router to a gateway? How will this effect members of my wireless network?
In theory, they should use the router as an access point then, and then allow the netgear dual wan to assign them an address, correct? |

Try this (attached) for drill if you have to have that middle router.
