    router or Internet sharing?

I have a linksys router right now and i was interested in just takening a regular machine and doing internet sharing and putting zone alarm on.

does the router create slow downs of any kind? would za be a better choice since a NAT router is a poor mans router? or should i just stick the router? guess reading fingers post got me interested with it since hes having a hard time over there.

or maybe ill just do it for a day as a learning experience

Greetings GZ3... I have a linksys and was also worried about speed when I configured it, so I did pre and post speed tests... no difference. Then, after configuring, a friend and I played half life together and I noticed that my latency did not change at all, even though two machines were playing at once from my house- this was a concern for me because a friend has basic DSL and his does deterioate with each gaming connection... but my cable had no problems. I have never played with internet sharing- I am interested if it decreases simultaneous connection speeds. A router allows each connection the possibility (depending on AMOUNT of bandwidth) of the full bandwidth, does internet connection sharing do the same? Also, again, this is a question based on no experience- does internet connection sharing use the same IP or is one created for the second machine? I am not sure what post you are speaking of with Fingers, so- I have not read it... but would be interested... you have a link? A linksys may be a poor mans firewall, but it combined with a firewall (esp a free one like ZA) makes for a pretty secure machine.

Goodluck and let us know what ya find out.

i was referring to this post fingers

i read the bottom on the thread and wasn't noticing the title thread was about win xp drive mappings

blah! thank mortis. i was just curious. but with ICS isn't it the same as NAT in a sense?

i wonder if WINXP is improved internet sharing over win98 se

We use a Linksys router, to a hub, that links 11 PCs. Speed has been excellent (ADSL). My station has ZoneAlarm, but it never goes off now. On my un-routered PC, it goes off about once every 30 minutes.

Oh, yeah. We run Win98se too.
I noticed a small speed increase when I pulled my PC off the hub & plugged directly into the router.

    yes, ICS does NAT.

ICS is at least changed some with WinXP (don't know if for better or for worse though)
