Random Disconnects

I am having a problem with my internet connection in that my computer randomly disconnects itself. I think this maybe down to my ISP which is rubbish but i was wondering, is there an option somewhere which causes it to disconnect after a certain amount of inactivity?

56k - Chances are probably (2 hours here in the UK)

Broadband - Cable, xDSL - Chances are not. If you're getting disconnections from your WAN, it's probably your ISP or faulty hardware.

Are you connecting via a Wireless Router? - Then chances are it'll be your LAN disconnecting, not your WAN.

Its DSL with no network or wireless. Im pretty sure that its my ISP, Tiscali, because my experience of them so far has been terrible.

Do you have a router or the modem plugged right into a computer?

It's common for DSL to automatically disconnect after a period of inactivity. Log into your router and check for a "Keep alive" or "Auto-Redial" option.

i have no router, the modem is plugged straight into the computer.

You can also run "keep alive" software on your computer. Basically all they do is send out a small amount of data so the DSL modem doesn't disconnect you. Do a google search for "keep alive" and it should come back with several keep alive tools that you can choose.
