| Connecting to Router???
Well, I installed this Linksys router WRK54G and trying to connect to my Inspirion notebook that has a Intel built in wireless card with no luck.
I had gone through the wizard at first that's on the CD. Then I went into 192.168.1.1 and configured things there as well. I had set it to be WPA encryption, don't know if that would be an issue.
I can get a connection on the laptop, but it can't obtain an IP number. I have tried no encryption, WEP and restarted the router to default settings. Plus I pressed the rest button on the router for 10 seconds to rest that way as well.
Nothing, I'm not sure if I should have something enabled here or what! Router works inline with the cable modem though. Actually it started to not work through the cable modem as soon as I logged off to go into another account. I went back to my account to see if it still wouldn't go online and it didn't. So I disconnected and connected the cable modem back. Have Internet, no router.
I think I have a crap router, don't know??? What do you think? And what are some good routers? I was thinking Netgear.

I forgot about the built in wifi card.
I have messed around with that too and as I said above, I got a connection just no IP number. |

With my setup, I changed the DHCP settings in the cable modem so that only the router acts as a DHCP server.
In a Motorola Surfboard modem you would uncheck the Enable DHCP Server box at http://192.168.100.1/config.html and hit the Save Changes button. Or you could disable the router's DHCP server function, instead.
Power down the whole system, then switch your DHCP server device back on, then the other devices.
Also, check that you are not using an ACL Access Control List. You would have to add the MAC addresses of all your connecting equipment (mainly the laptop wireless card) to make that work.

192.168.100.1 never new I could use that address to get acces to the modem, /config doesn't work though.
I checked it and just gives me info, on status and so fourth, no options to turn on or off.
So, I will see if disabling DHCP in the router will work so that the modem will hand out the IP numbers.
I will have two-three computers connecting. I want to defiantly use WPA, I don't see WPA2 as the routers option unfortunately. Now with WPA, I wonder if this could be a problem with the lease of key/s. If I use WPA-PSK I belive I need to setup a key server? Not sure how.
BTW, No firewalls were on when I tried to get this going.
I tried using provisions (ACL) for MAC's just to see if this would help actually. I typed my wifi card's MAC into the allow list, but no luck with that. It is off now, I plan on using it though for added security as soon as I can get a connection established. Also would like to disable broadcast SID too.

No big deal. This just means you MUST leave the DHCP on the router enabled. Quote: |

| If you can't connect without encryption, then I recommend you leave it off until you get the laptop connected wirelessly. Once you've worked out whatever the problem is, then you can enable it.
Let's first rule out the non-wired issues. Can you at least connect to the internet via the router's wired LAN ports? |

Is your modem a Motorola Surfboard? I have seen a Scientific Atlanta type which never allowed any option changes.
I first set up my wireless with SSID hidden, and it caused problems for me, so I would suggest not using that option until you are completely satisfied with the rest of your wireless setup. |

SID is broadcasting!
I reset everything back as I stated above and still the router won't hand out an IP for my laptop. Specs above.
Yes, the router allows me to connect to the net wired. As I said above though, it did stop working. So I disconnected it and I'll have to reconnect to see if in fact it will still work inline with the cable modem and the desktop computer.
From 192.168.100.1, cable modem info.
ARRIS DOCSIS 1.1 / PacketCable 1.0 Touchstone Telephony Modem HW_REV: 32
VENDOR: Arris Interactive, L.L.C
Now I found this interesting in the event log page for the cable modem: Date Time Event ID Event Level Description
***** 20000200 3 No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out
***** 17000400 3 SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to receive MAC SYNC frame within time-out period
***** 17000100 3 SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to acquire QAM/QPSK symbol timing
***** 20000200 3 No Ranging Response received - T3 time-out
***** 13000300 5 DHCP WARNING - Non-critical field invalid in response
I wonder if I should now call the cable company.
I'm on the net now with it! Just can't get that router to work wirelessly, wired, yes. I can get connected on the laptop, but it is constantly acquiring IP number and of course eventually says failed to do so.

I had a simuliar prob with my Mothers laptop which was wi-fi and after pulling my hair for a while I found deep into crontrol panel and network connection and getting to advancd settings it was turned off but you would never know it if you didnt find it, it did the same thing as you described. I clicked on and it works fine now.

I wouldn't be too concerned with the warnings in the log. Sometimes it takes a while for the modem to sync up with the network. The important thing is that it eventually did sync up, and is communicating fine now.
Since it's performing fine via the wired LAN ports, then the problem lies with the wireless portion of the router. This is very possible. I've had a similar problem happen with a Belkin router I had. The only solution here was to get a new (and better) router.
Do you know if any of the laptop's wireless network adapter properties have changed from default. You want to make sure that it's getting it's IP address from the DHCP server. Also, you ARE connecting to YOUR linksys router, right? I had a problem once where a neighbor's linksys router was interfering. The routers were both using the SSID "linksys", and the wifi adapter kept trying to go on my neighbor's router, which was encrypted. Simple solution was to change the SSID and channel from the defaults.

I ran into the same problem not too long ago with a new wireless card. Never did figure out exactly what the problem was but it seemed to have fixed itself. It drove me crazy trying to figure out what the issue was. I had to setup a static IP for awhile and eventually the new card and router "synced" themselves
