Ok, bought a new house, it has two wired sockets wired between the study and two bedrooms with cat 5 and RJ-45 wall sockets. I hadn't been using them because I had wireless set up, but tested them recently. No worky. Now, I have a cable tester which send signals between the pairs, and that shows packets are being sent fine (all pairs show green). You can plug the cables in and all the sockets on the PC's and router light up, and windows sees a connection. BUT it won't get an IP, and still won't work if you set the IP manually.
I check the RJ-45 sockets today, and all the wiring seems OK and all the wires are punched down correctly. My question is: would running the cat 5 incorrectly in the roof space (eg alongside a mains electrical cable) prevent the signal from working, but allow the line tester to work?
That's my next step, to see if the roof space wiring is bad. But before I do that and get all dirty up there, thought I'd ask you lot.
I would have thought that if it's noise from electrical wiring then I would get an IP and stuff but have poor data transfer and dropouts, not no signal at all. Thoughts on that?
Thanks
Mick

I have tested them with different cables using my laptop and a router. Connecting the laptop directly to the router works; connecting via the cables (have tried various cables) and the wall sockets doesn't.
Is that what you mean, Nick?

Where do the cables(inside the wall) from the walls sockets connect to? |

Is the CAT5 a crossover or standard straight through cable?

To another wall socket in another room, Nick.
I think I have it. I had looked at the RJ-45 wiring initially and it was the same at both ends. BUT... now looking at thsi website (they are Clipsal sockets) I can see that both the sockets are cross wired. The blue wires and green wires are not connected correctly. So looks like I need some new RJ-45 sockets, and I don't think I can change the wires around once they have been punched down.
Thanks for your interest, Nick. looks like I'll gonna have to get some new sockets.
Cheers

That's a thought.. maybe using a crossover cable would work? Doubt it, but will try...

You need it to be a straight through cable for connecting PC to router, crossover for connecting one PC to another PC. |

I know AR, but I was hoping the crosswired sockets would work with a crossover cable at each end. I tried connecting a x-over cable to each wall socket, then directly to the laptop and router. No difference.
Looks like new sockets...

Wow. It sounds like your all crossed up. Have fun replacing the sockets. Couldn't you just rewire the sockets to the correct configuration? |
