Hello to all, I need some information on setting up VPN for an office (7 users).
The office equipment = Linksys wireless router set up as DHCP, Dell PC running Vista Ultimate, connection to router by Ethernet cable, and always on never powered down (acting as a file server)
Users have laptops that they bring home (connect wireless to their own router).
Now they want to connect to "Work" network to access files on "Vista".
Not sure if Vista would let more than one user to connect to it at the same time (not sure of anything when it comes to Vista really).
How would I set up a VPN to this machine and still keep security??
Thanks to all for replying. |

Haven't got a clue how it works in Vista, but in XP you create a new connection, choose Advanced Connections, then "Accept incoming connections." Then just follow the wizard. Forward port 1723 on the router to your Vista box.
As I said, I have no idea if it works the same way in Vista.

Ok so I have the Router set up to pass IPsec, and port 1723 is forwarded to the PC IP address. One more question, when I try to "connect" do I connect to the Router IP address (this makes sense to me) and to Port 1723?? http://66.119.XXX.XXX:1723
Sorry but I have never set up a VPN let alone even used one. This is all new to me.
But thanks for your input. |

Again, I only know XP, but in XP to connect to a VPN machine behind a router, you create a new connection, choose Connect to the network at my workplace, then Virtual Private Network, then give it a name, then put in the IP address of your router (no port). You'll need a username/password that will work on the VPN machine itself. In other words, act like you're logging into the Vista machine.
Major important note: The VPN machine and the client machine cannot be on the same subnet. So if the internal IP of the Vista machine is something like 192.168.1.x, then client machine must be 192.168.2.x (or anything other than 192.168.1.x). If both are on the same subnet, traffic will not route through the VPN tunnel.
Good info here on setting up an XP based VPN. It *may* be similar in Vista. |
