Cannot connect to network from laptop but internet is fine

I am using windows XP on both laptop and host PC with a netgear ADSL firewall router DG834G I can connect to the internet on both machines (the PC is wired via the LAN cable. But I cannot share any files or printer etc nothing is recognised dispite running the network setup wizard.
I have noticed that I cannot access windows firewall settings because of an "unidentified problem" could this be anything to do with it, I have a firewall built into my PCcillin antivirus software disabling this does not change anything. Any suggestions ???
