| Can I use 56k modem and broadband router
Can I use a 56k modem and broadband router on my home pc.
Then connect to the net through my laptop's usb wireless adapter.
Ie: wireless connection from laptop to router then to net using PC modem? |

If you can connect to the 'Net via wireless, what's the need for a modem? If it's just the two comps and you are willing to connect them via CAT5 Ethernet, then, depending on seperation distance, you won't even need a router, just some ICS software, resident in Me, 98SE, and XP and an Ethernet adapter for both comps. Over a certain distance (officially 10 Meters) then you could just use a switch to amplify the packets.

I can't connect to the net via wireless.
That's what I'm trying to do.
I've got a 56k net connection on pc, but would like to get the net on my laptop.
I've got: usb wireless net adapter for pc, broadband 54mb router, 56k modem. |

What you would need to do is setup a wireless network between your desktop and your laptop. Then, dial into your internet from your desktop and enable internet sharing over the wireless network through Windows network settings.
I do not know if it will work from a dialup connection or not though.

I do not know if it will work from a dialup connection or not though. | this article should help you out http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en again I'm with biz on this not sure it will work with dial-up and even if it does its going to be terribly slow!
edit: using ad hoc does require that you have wireless cards on both the pc and the laptop. You might be able to find a way to use the modem but ICS is meant to be used without one.
this article might help as well http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...02april08.mspx

Thanks for the replies guys.
Do I need a wireless card in my pc? Is a router not a wireless transmitter?
To set up a wireless connection (without internet) can I :
Connect the router to the pc's modem with an ethernet cable, then wirelessly connect to the router using my laptop's wireless adapter? |

I just added in an edit with two links that explain it pretty well. You'll need to read through them a little but it should be pretty easy to get it up and running from there. The second link explains how to set it up in pretty good detail. |

Yeah, you should be able to set it up with the desktop connected wired to the router and the laptop wireless, then just enable ICS. It might get trickier if you want a net gateway PC that shares the connection to the router as a WAN connection, but as a peer-to-peer setup with the built in ICS it's not too hard. |
