Wireless AND Hardwired

My wife's PC is hardwired to the wireless router. In "my" room (Command Central) I have my Dell 2400 "family shared" computer and my gaming PC; both connect wireless to the newtork.

I want to put Microsoft Home Server on a Virtual Machine on my gamer (since it IS the most powerful) and then HARDWIRE it to the Dell 3 feet away.

The plan then is to have my wife copy files to the Dell and then let the Virtual Server do the backups over the hardwire.

1. Can I have Wireless and Hardwire connection AT THE SAME TIME?

2. Would I just assign static private IP address to the NICS in the gamer and the Dell for this?

3. And this direct connection would require a crossover cable, correct?

I probably don't really need the hardwire for doing the backups, but I'm not sure if Home Servier works with wireless or not.

Thanks!!

1. Yes, you can have a wired and wireless connection at the same time.

That's how my kids computers are hooked up. I had one on wireless, the other linked to it by ethernet cable sharing the wireless internet connection. I recently got a wireless card for the second computer, leaving the wired connection so they could still play games like Diablo II, Freelancer together.

2. I really don't know the answer to that.

3. Yes, you will need a crossover cable for the direct connection between PCs.

From what I could gather on my short search, Windows Home Server should work on a wireless connection. I didn't delve into how to set it up though. I let you figure that one out.
