Can anyone help me with bandwidth?

How do I/can i increase my bandwidth? When downloading or playing Q3A multiplayer I cant get any greater use than 20 percent of my available bandwidth.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Network gaming doesn't actually use much of bandwith. Though, if you exhaust your bandwith with d/l etc. you're sure to get extremely high pings.

    What is your connection?
If it's cable, then no wonder If it's adsl, you need to contact your service provider.
20% of promised bandwith is far than what's reasonable.

    Thank you guys for replying.
    1. No DSL nor cable. Just POTS.
    2. The fastest I can connect is 28.8 and it is usually 26.4.
    3. I have the best isp in my area - MSN
    4. When I download my bandwidth stays at about 20% of what is possible for my modem(28.8)
    5. When I play Q3A that usually gives me pings in the high 400 to low 600 on the BEST of the servers I can connect on.

    To say I'M NOT HAPPY!!
    is an understatement.

what pings were you exepecting with dial up?

150 or lower pings? Don't expect alot out of those dinky phone lines. There are many factors that deal with your bandwidth. the msn server you are connected to and how old the phone lines in your house. not really many tweaks will help you.

If you are using an internal WinModem, you might consider replacing it.

    HI guys thanks for answering.

GZ3- No I wasnt expecting 150 or less i was just wanting better than 600 (AND UP) ping.
Mortis - Yes I am but my dual athlon helps it along fine I think. the previous five 56k modems produced no better results and on 3 of those I never got better than 24.0. The only reason I have this one is because the old 28.8 external was zapped by lightening last year, otherwise I'd still be useing it. That old modem gave me no troubles like ALL the newer modems have given me. Yes I have recently had the lines checked they are up to "bellsouth standard" - meaning that I AM GUARANTEED a connection at 9600 or LESS. AARRGG!

    End of rant i guess.

Can I improve the percent of the bandwidth? If I can connect at 28.8 cant I download/play at 28.8 instead of the 20 of the 28.8 speed(6K)?
    Or am I confused?
    Thanks in advance.

if you tried 5 other 56k modems and have the same results sounds like the phone lines in your house are old. because you connect at 28.8 does not mean your connection is 28.8 its a ruff estimate. It also depends on what site your connected to and how there traffic is and who hosts the site on how fast you get stuff on from there server. have you maybe tried dial in to another phone number?

    Thanks GZ3,
I have tried 2 other numbers and they dont connect as fast/well as this number does.
Hm are You saying that my actual bandwidth use doesnt depend on anything I can do? That its all up to the 'net/server connections?

Actually its up to your phone co. and your ISP with phone co.how close you are to your serving switch in most cases, also how your phone copper has been prepped unfortunately most phone co. don't say they support over 9600,but if prepared right(copper pair),and distance from switch mean alot more speed. Was connecting with dial up at 28.8 but after having ISDN(that I dropped)I noticed dialup connections went up to 40.0.got tired of that and went dsl(but bell stinks)so now have cable.

actualy your pings should be WAY better than 400 on dial up
the 56kers who connect to my DSL server (which is not too low ping) get like 300 ping. the 56kers who are on the GirlPower OC3 server (TFC) get about 140 ping which is real good.

Thanks Dlr37919 and chooco for your answers.

Can anyone tell me why when I download a page from the web my use spikes at 100 percent and trickles down to 0 percent use(as expected), but when downloading(using FTP) a file(say 2-3 megs) the best use i get is 20 percent?

Why doesn't it stay at/about 100 percent? The same for my MP game Q#A it stays about 20 percent of the available use.

like i said before just before you connect at a certain speed, does not mean you will download that fast. it also depends on who you are downloading from and there host. there is always someone else downloading.

on your setup do you have those connectors for phonelines to make one long string or you plugged directly in to the wall?

line noise is a huge factor with degraging speeds with dial up.

    Hi BroundZero3,
The modem line runs about 7 feet before it goes into the wall.
The line noise would explain why I am never able to connect at a decennt speed. But I thought the length was short enough for it to not be a problem.
    Thanks JaYsin.

line noise could be either thru the line connecting you to the wall or even past it. it could be the line in your house that is behind the wall or the line going from the house to the telephone company.
