Installing a new router (Setup)

I have ordered new broadband its is in effect today. They say that I will have to use their own router to experience the full effect of the 8mb speed, I dont have a a problem with this, but I dont know why some ISP's do this.

Okay, I have received this router from them and I want to change the setup in my house. Currently I have only one telephone socket working, the appears to ve some problem with the other ones. So there is a fast speed RJ11 cable running from downlstairs hall all the way to one of the upstairs bedroom.

One of the questions which I want to ask if whether or not the lenth or setup of the cables affect the speeds that significantly?

What I really want to do is put the router in my room, because sometime the power gets turned off in its current position, and I cant be having that when Im running a webserver which I intend to setup soon.
I would also like to use my old router as an access point in the house somewhere.

These are the options Ive thought about:
1) Put the router downstairs next to the socket, run an RJ45 cable to my room to feed the internet to my two 3 computers. This cable would go into a hub, and then again distributed to the PC's. (Wireless is an option, but I want wired facility)
2) Put the router in my room, and put the 3 cables into the back of the router without any use of a hub. So I would be still using that long RJ11 cable.

Both options consist of using long cables, but I dont know which one would have less impact on the speed, personally, I think option 2 would be the best one.

What are your ideas.

The length of either cable should not affect your speed. If you were running over 300m, then you might see some degredation. I'm guessing you're not running more than 75m?

It sounds like you're using Option 2 now. I would just stick with it.

Its not more than 75m. Im with my old router right now, so Im using option 1, but I'd be using option 2 when I install my new router (most likely).

The manual which came with my router, it says that the RJ11 cable should not be more than 10m long. I dont think that cable is that long, but they said anything more could affect my speed.

If I was to introduce a hub to my network in option 2, so I'd have a hub in my room, would this affect the speeds? I feel that the network cables wont reach all the way to my computers in the room, and I might need to extend them some how.

having one or two devices on the hub wont really slow down things, however i wouldn't recommend installing it

The best long term solution is to wire your house with Cat5. Make a weekend of it. It's fun!!

Well, my upstairs is fully wired, we did this ages ago and the wire are still there in their wall mounted tunnels. If Im going to re-wire anything, Id would probably be with Cat6, after looking at the prices I don't think I'll be considering that anymore.

Im going to go with option 2. Either way the network setup is going to invlove some kind of long wire.

Im just thinking, should I use the existing 10m high-speed RJ11 wire and couple it to another 3m RJ11 wire, to get it to my room. OR, Get a 20, RJ11 wire and not couple it, and get it straight to my room?
