DSL Modems - Can You Use Any One?

I'm getting DSL internet, and Verizon is sending me their modem, but can I get my own modem or any dsl modem for that matter, and use it? Or are dsl modems like cell phones and branded to the carrier?

You need to use whatever is compliant with your carrier.

You DO NOT have to use theirs.

This may sound stupid, but how can I tell which ones are compliant? I've been searching the 'net and I see all sorts or modems (DAMN! When did these things get so expensive???) but I have no clue as to which ones will work with Verizon and which won't. I don't want to be renting a modem from them when I can buy one and it's mine.

Go to your carriers site, they may have a list of them for you that work with their service.

Both Quest and Comcast have a list.
