    Interleaving

    Hi all,

Can someone please explain what turning "interleaving" off does / will do pls? Someone recommended me calling my IP and asking for it to be off as my ping jumps around like no ones business sometimes.

    cheers,

You have a DSL connection, correct? "Interleaving" for DSL is essentially a type of error correction so borderline connections can be stabilized. If interleave support is being enabled, then you likely need it to sustain your current connection rate. Your telecom provider is not likely to disable it without good reason, such as a proven stable line, which could require a line quality test to be performed on site by a service technician.

If interleave support is disabled on a truly borderline line, you could incur bandwith problems and even intermittent service drops. You might try discussing a fall back to the next lowest bandwidth tier in hopes of sustaining a stable connection without interleave support assuming latency is more important to you than bandwidth.

Still, assuming you have a decent line with only moderate noise, then your latency should at least be decently stable. It sounds like your latencies are bouncing around. If so, you could have line quality problems. How do you have the DSL connection ran? Straight from the outside network junction box, shared with your current phone wiring inside the house, etc.?

Have filters on the line too? I believe you have to put them in line with your telephones.

Correct. You should isolate POTS telephones from DSL modems. The standard procedure for residential connections is typically installing a filter at each telephone.

    hi,

    Thanks for your replies.
My internet connection has an isolated line to itself as used to be used for business purposes. It can go for months with no problems but rarely seems to allow a download speed of more than 160 kb/s and I'm only a few hundred yards from the exchange!! however, like you stated, the download speed is not my main concern, my main concern is the latency. I prefer this to be under 30 which it often is but then will jump to 150-200 for weeks on end!!

I gather from your response I should leave 'interleaving' out of the solution I'm looking for but I really am stumped!!
I run a "up to" 4mb connection through a Netgear router. Are they notoriously bad or something!!!

    thanks again,
