Windows 2003 DHCP Server not responding to DHCP discover broadcast
It's been a while, but I'm back. So, here's my stumper of a problem.
The config:
New Windows 2003 Enterprise Server with 2 NICs, DHCP, DNS, ADS, IIS, and Routing and Remote Access configured. NIC1 connects to internet through firewall and to local "DMZ" network where the other server resides. NIC2 connects to internal LAN.
Old Windows 2000 Advanced Server with 1 NIC, DHCP, DNS, ADS, IIS, and Exchange 2000 configured.
Both servers exist within the same domain.
The problem:
W2K server has been, and continues to run all services normally.
W2K3 server, well, that's where the problem is. IIS appears to work fine. ADS and DNS, after some fiddling around, appear to be running fine. Routing and Remote Access appears to work so long as I keep the firewall/port filtering off while accessing shared folders across it. DHCP - I need help on this one. As far as I know it is configured correctly. It's authorized and activated within the domain for both the internal and "DMZ" scopes. However, neither works for computers which were previously obtaining DHCP leases from the W2K server, and can still obtain a lease from the W2K server. The network monitor shows the DHCP Discover broadcast being received on either NIC, but the W2K3 server does not appear to respond, even with the W2K server's DHCP shutdown.
Any ideas? What I've found thus far on various searches has been somewhat useless. Portqry shows port 67 and 68 as 'not listening' for both servers, so that doesn't really help when it says the working server isn't listening. At the moment, all Windows firewall and port filtering functions on the W2K3 server are disabled as far as I can tell.
I've seen similar threads on other forums which never show what the resolution was. It really sucks when you can find other people having similar problems, but no solutions. So any ideas beyon rebuilding the server would be helpful and appreciated.
Thanks,
Tim

I have exactly the same problem
Hi Tim,
I have the same problem on my network. All of a sunddely out DHCP server stopped responding. I tried to install DHCP server in two other computers, a domain controller and a member server, and nothing. But when a install DHCP server on a Windows 2003 based computer not joined to domain it works fine. Do you have any ideas ?
thanks,
Joao

I just had a similar issue and after some hours of testing and analyzing found a possible cause.
Your Windows 2003/2008 DHCP server will only listen on one IP per NIC
Check if the above scenario is not the case for you too.Last edited by regeter; April 23rd, 2011 at 10:57 PM.
