D-Link DI-624 router "faulty", Linksys WRT54g not picking up internet
First off, i have virtually no experience with networking except for what i have tried to fix over the past 3 or 4 days.
To start off,we are running windows XP on 3 computers. We have Verizon FiOS internet service hooked up to a cable modem, and currently hooked into a Linksys WRT54g wireless router. The computer i am using right now is hard wired into the router and can get onto the internet. it is the computer that was configured with the original verizon internet setup as well.
I am using the linksys router because the D-Link DI-624 "AirPlus Xtreme G Wireless Router" that was previously used was described as "faulty" by a verizon support tech over the phone. (the linksys router is my old router from college that non of my roommates wanted and so i got to keep. but unfortunately i have no Setup CD with it.) the Verizon tech also said he was not familiar with the linksys router and could not help us install it. that was after several phone calls and atleast 2 waits of longer than 45 minutes on hold. I do not want to call them back if at all possible.
as for the official problem: i cannot get any computers that are using wireless adapters onto the internet, and i cannot get an Internet IP address from the wireless router....and to complicate things further, i can no longer access the web-based setup page. http://192.168.1.1 will only display a "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" message in IE7, and will NOT display a username and password dialogue box.
What i have tried: I have used the linksys tech support page, "Setting-Up a Linksys Router with Cable Internet" ( http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/...=3968237401B06 ). I was able to access the web-based setup page but was never able to get the Internet IP to change from "0.0.0.0" .
my mom later tried the same linksys tech support, but she used the "Setting-Up a Linksys Router with DSL" and had no luck either. but at one point she changed the router IP to 192.168.2.1 or 192.168.0.1 and since then i have not been able to get back to the web-based support page (where you have to type admin as the password, and leave the user field blank).
So my questions:
How can I get the linksys router to work????
Why is/Is my D-link router really faulty?
please remember, i dont have experience with networking/routers, so i will give you as much info as possible if you need it. but, I am 24 years old, I was never married, and I live in a van down by my parents house. atleast its not the basement, right? ok, i live on the first floor.
all help is greatly appriciated, sorry about the long post, but im just trying to provide as much info as possible.

When you reset the router make sure its unplug from everything and hit the button a time or two. The you should get the default setting which should allow you to visit the default set-up page at 192.168.1.1. But if not Open the dos prompt and type ipconfig, the default gateway should be the the ip address for the router. Which should allow you to connect to the setup page.
Try getting into your router setup without it being connected to the modem. There might be some sort of conflict there.

oh, and one other side effect that i have come to realize....we have fios TV as well, and apparently the TV needs to use the router to connect its IMG (Interactive Media Guide),so in effect:
my FiOS TV Guide is no longer working, i can only change channels by pressing the up/down channel key or the number buttons on the remote

is there a router password?? and if so, how would i go about finding it?
and do i have to enter in a password somewhere on the router setup page so i can access my verizon fios internet through the router? i feel as though i may be putting in a wrong username/password somehow.

Default for Linsys is user: admin. There is no password. (I could be wrong.) Make sure you change that. When you reset the router, you should press and hold the button for at least 10 seconds.
From here you may have to call tech support now that you can get into the web based configuration. There may be settings you need for FIOS. Wish I had FIOS..I just don't know.Last edited by Keymaker; December 20th, 2007 at 10:22 PM.

Does FIOS not have service guys? Because with FIOS there may be settings you need to use with the router.
As far as the TV goes...I would think that is directly connected to the modem and not the router.
Sure the router is wired correctly?
What is the make and model of your FIOS modem?Last edited by Keymaker; December 23rd, 2007 at 10:30 PM.

A little update....
After a few more calls with the verizon tech's, my mom finally got them to send us a new D-Link router. Apparently, if you have FiOS TV along with FiOS Internet, then your Router has a life long warranty as long as you have a contract with Verizon. The tech said on the phone that the D-Link router has the capability to deal with the FiOS TV as well as internet. Other Routers (such as Linksys) do not have this capability. So they will be sending a new D-link Router by Friday, and we can call and have another tech help set it up.
thanks for the help guys, im not sure why i need the D-link router, im guessing b/c verizon has a deal with D-Link for their FiOS TV.
as for wiring, i believe the verzion FiOS box in our basement his wired to a little box by the computer, which is inturn plugged into the router, which is plugged into the modem. On the back of the modem, i see a model number of NIM100 (motorola). it looks similar to an old cable box i had for comcast, except with a couple of little boxes connected together where it says "ON" on the front of this image:
again, thanks for the help, i appreciate it. hopefully if someone comes across a similar problem, the verizon tech's will be able to help.Last edited by cheeser; December 27th, 2007 at 03:08 AM.

Fix your Linksys
Theres a Reset button at the back for your Linksys Router. Pres and hold that button with a pen point about 4 to 5 Seconds Untill it reboots . Your router is resetted to factory default setting....
IP = 192.168.1.1 , Id = " " (blank), Password = "admin" good luck
This method works only if router is loaded with Original Linksys/ Cisco Firmwarr. Which mean you never modify it with third party Firmware....

I have a box similar to that from Comcast just like you said. The cable box has to be separate from the router. I would think.. The box has a LAN jack? That would be crazy! I guess its wired to another box near the modem. Geesh!! Can't have too many box's can you?
I think the FIOS modem isn't wired correctly causing havoc in the line or you need to install the latest firmware to the FIOS modem.
Make sure you ask the tech guy about the firmware and if its updated or not.
EDIT-WOW! It does have a LAN jack! http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-MOTOROLA-NIM...QQcmdZViewItemLast edited by Keymaker; January 14th, 2008 at 02:26 AM.
