Local network - printing

My freind is having a problem with the following

he know when adding a printer on the local network, the path is \\computer name\printer share name.

but is it possible to add a printer on another network over the Internet? he was thinking the path might be something like \\network IP\printer share name.

Has anybody tried this? Would it be possible? Could it possibly also be done in IE, on the fly

This would be of interest to me as well. Would like to share several of my resources with sis (Babydingbat) but haven't found a way over the internet that was halfway secure...

I'm using WinXP at both ends if that helps...

I have not tried it, but the WinXP networking wizzard makes it look real "doable" Why not try using that CERupple and let us know how it goes and if it works for you. I think your set up would also make a big diff, and whether you're using a router or not, on both ends.

yup surreal it is. if the person wanted to use a whole different network printer then the best bet would to do a VPN.
