I've heard that LinkSys is one of the best routers I can buy for hardware firewall protection...I use a cable modem to connect to the net and I do have Sygate Personal Firewall installed. Do I REALLY need to install a router for full protection or am I cool with the software only? If you recommend a router, what kind and why? Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't buy a router just for its firewall. If you have another computer you want to connect to the internet, then it makes sense. But the Sygate should be fine.

If you want a firewall/router the Linksys BEFSR41 is easy to setup.
Price on the net is $75.00. |

I have Sygate Personal Firewall and the Linksys BEFSR41. I have my computer on DMZ, effectively disabling the hardware firewall, because I already have the software firewall. I know thier not the same, but Its a pain to remember all the port numbers to do everything with...So I have both yet disable the hardware one.
In otherwise, I also dont suggest you get the router unless you need to split the connection. The firewall should be a bonus and not a reason to buy it if you already have a software firewall IMO. |

Martoch,
It all depends on how paranoid you are. If you get a router, it is usually to connect more than one system to the internet. But if you are going to the expence of buying one, why not get one that has NAT, and a firewall. Again alot depends on what you are doing with your system / network. Do you have your own web server, do you need access to an ftp server, or to "pcAnywhere" on your system etc. I'm the paranoid type. I have a Netgear Fr314 and Sygate. The Fr314 is a router / 4 port switch / firewall. You need to decide how much protection you need /want, vs. the applications you are running on your system.
IMO

Price on the net is $75.00. | ditto... plus the BESFR4.1 offers NAT. I've had mine about 1.5 years, no problems, set up real easy, firmware U/Gs are simple.
