ClearWire's service is pretty similar in functionality. It provides long-range high speed NLOS broadband access over the BRS / EBS (formerly MMDS/ITFS) licensed radio spectrum. I'm not sure an end user could tell the difference between ClearWire's offering and Sprint's Xohm.
The major architectural difference between the two is ClearWire's network utilizes Motorola's
Expedience (formerly NextNet Wireless Expedience) platform which is a proprietary technology, while Sprint's Xohm will deploy WiMAX certified hardware, likely from Motorola.
ClearWire has publicly stated all new network build-outs will utilize Motorola's WiMAX hardware. Motorola has built new dual-mode CPEs (new BTS's can be configured to run in either mode, but not both) that can operate using the Expedience or WiMAX architecture to help ease migration headaches for the various
providers, but ClearWire has chosen to forego deploying this equipment and jump straight into WiMAX.
If you absolutely can't wait and must test this technology now, I suggest you check to see if one of the above providers is available in your area and contact them for a demo of their equipment. I've seen this stuff in action. It works great. Driving down a highway at 60mph while having 4-5mbps internet, and seamless handoffs between base stations is amazing...definitely enough to impress any geek. ;-)
