| WinXP and cable router?
I'm preparing to connect 3 PC's to a Linksys BEFSR41 V.2 router. Two PC's will be running Win98SE, the other will run WinXP Pro. I understand there are issues with this setup...
I'm connected to Road Runner using the usual Toshiba cable modem. My IP seems to remain the same unless I connect a new PC.
Any advice on configuring this arrangement? Do I need to update the firmware on my router?
BTW, should I update my browser to Internet Explorer 5.5 before proceeding?

Do you mean you have the router hooked up and when you change pc's the IP changes?
Just a note, when everyone is hooked up, and you do an ipconfig, the only ip that will show up is the pc. Your "real" ip from the ISP is being sent to the router. The router sends the info to the pc's but that can only be seen by opening the router up in your browser.
As far as IE goes why not upgrade to 6.0?
I also have a 98 box on my XP network with no problems.
(4 xp boxes and 1 98) |

I've heard mixed reviews trying to network XP Pro with 98 machines. Getting on the internet shouldn't be a problem at all. If your Linky f/w is 1.39 or later, probably no reason to upgrade, but I would always suggest upgrading to IE 5.5 sp2 for security reasons.
A good place to look for more help is the DSLR Linksys forum here: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/equip,16

| Set a static IP under "Local Area Connection Properties". And set the default gateway address to what the router is. If you haven't changed factory setting for the Linksys Router, it should be 192.168.1.1... And as far as I know, there aren't any problems networking XP and Win98 on the same network. However, unlike networking Windows 2000 with Windows XP, you need to create a networking diskette and use it to communicate with the XP systems...

Also remember to clone MAC-Address if necessary. Alot of cable modems I have worked with require it. And I'd go with IE6 on the XP machine (doesnt it already have it) and keep 5.5 on the 98 machines. 6 seems to be slower IMO on the 98 machines...but maybe thats because my 98 machine is older

Thanks for the comments everyone.
Sometimes coming here is a surreal experience...
Now, let's see, update 98 cows to Explorer 5.5, don't worry about it...Draboo and Surreal can do it, oh, and Tekk said somethin' about having a Big Mac clone while I'm doin' the work...
Got it! |
