XP networking problem?

Hi everyone, let's see is someone here can help me with my problem. The problem I'm having is that recently I configured a home peer-peer network (right now with two machines, soon three, all have XP), everything went smoothly. Both computers can "see" each other, the problem is that one of the computers won't connect to the internet using the dial-up connection that already exist. It does connect but does three things:

1.Gives an error message, something like error 50, check your network settings, or something like that can't really remember

2.It connects but after some time it just disconnects by itself.

3.It connects prompting that "All devices" are connected, but after that it just disconnects again.

All this trouble started when I set-up the home network, before that, the dial-up connection did work. If you need to know, the network don't share them connection. Any help will be appreciated

When you view network connections what does that computer show for the internet connection?

May be either you have set a gateway where you do not need one, or are using proxy settings when you don't need them.

Did you set up windows Internet Connection Sharing? Is one PC configured with IP address 192.168.0.1, and the other as automatically obtaining IP address from DCHP?

That is how windows ICS works best.

Check here for more: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/

Cheers

Umm I probably forgot to say that it's an old ISA modem . It has given me problems in the past, especially a conflict with the IRQ, but that's fixed. Does the modem itself is the problem??

Surreal, the computer shows both, the dial-up connections and the LAN connection.

Mickwish, the network is not seup to share any internet connection, the other question I really don't know (networkng newbie here ), but I'll check it when I get home.

Sounds like a conflict between the network card and the modem, now. Did it only start when you added the network card, or made it work?

Try unloading the network card - you can leave it physically in place, just use device manager to remove it, reboot, and let the network card reinstall. If that doesn't fix it, try reinstalling the modem after the network card.

Still could be a conflict cause by ICS - installs by default in winXP Pro I think, not sure about XP Home.

Did you set up sharing with the XP wizard? If so, it might have enable ICS automatically. What IP addresses are listed in the LAN connection?

More questions than answers yet, but hopefully we'll help you fix it!

Cheers
Mick

Thanks for the help mickwish, I'll answer all those questoins when I arrive to my place today. Anyway, I think that sharing was setup by the XP wizard. I'll try reinstalling the Network card an the modem, will let you know how everything goes . Thanks again for the help

If you're not sharing an internet connection, you may want to re-run the XP networking wizard and select the option that says you're connected to a LAN, but have no internet connection. After you have your Network set up and working, go into Internet Options>Connections and set your dialup account as "default" and check the option to Always dial my default connection

If your ISA modem has been problematic, perhaps that's the problem, but I think the XP network wizard probably assumed you were going to share a connection and disabled your modem.

BTW, I've been happily sharing a dialup connection on my Win98/WinXP LAN for a few months now and it has been much more enjoyable than having to use a modem in each machine

Hey fingers thanks for the help. I've been thinking of sharing the Dial-up connection for the LAN, but I think I'll use another machine, because that @#$%^ modem has given me so much trouble. Anyway thanks for the help I'll check on that to

It's pretty simple to set up under WinXP.

1) Connect to the internet on the computer you want to use as your "gateway" to for your network.

2) Click on "Set up a home or small office network" in My Network Places

3) Check the box that says: "This computer connects directly to the internet. The other computers on the network connect to the internet through this computer."

4) Use the same workgroup name as your other computers, then when the wizard is finished, reboot and reconnect to the internet.

5) Run the Network wizard on the other computers but this time select the option that says "This computer connects to the internet through another computer or residential gateway"

The first time you try to access the internet from the "client" machines, you may have to change your internet settings to "Dial whenever network connection is not present" but other than that you should be all set
