| Remotely Access hard drive via internet?
Ok my question here is it possible to actually remotely access a hard drive the same way you do on a home network via internet. I mainly want to know cause I built a mate a pc and am helping him with some stuff and this will help me heaps thanks. (No need for lamens terms I'm very literate ) |

Sure you can, lamens or not. But you need ti think about if you really WANT to expose your whole hard drive to the internet. I think not.
So, one way to do this is by setting up an FTP server, and allowing only a portion of the files on your hard drive to be visible via the internet. A good FTP server application can limit access to only those files you want to be made visible.
Cheers
Mick

Hmm that is true even a long password can eventually be brute forced but I was thinking more along the lines of tempoary on an off access.. |

Remote Desktop that's built into Windows comes to mind..
Then there are freebie connection apps like LogMeIn. |

Remote Desktop is an FTP client of sorts. It can be secured and is easy to configure and use. You can set NTFS permissions on it so that the remote site is available only during certain hours.
You will find it in the Help File and is worded in layman's terms as are most of the Windows instructions. I do not recommend using an outside server as that is just one more place to hack into your system. With RDP the system is not directly exposed to the internet as such and you can configure your firewall to allow access from the remote system in any number of ways. You can also restrict access to certain files and/or folders.
Having A+ is not an advantage when doing networking. It gives you a good overview but I have seen self-taught ppl that know far more than what A+ affords.

Then there are freebie connection apps like LogMeIn. | Depending on what exactly you plan on doing with only access to a HD, LogMeIn is a great tool and is easy enough to use. I would recommend this over creating an FTP so you dont have to sit on the phone explaining what to do and just do it yourself.
Dont forget to charge for your time. |

Do you have any idea how hard it is to read that post? Please be considerate and add some punctuation or something...
Anyway, he can log in with his regular credentials (if he knows his username and password, that is).
