Got data server computer now want stand alone

While I can access the net via IE and Opera. they can find the port or whatever and get out to it. I notice that some things cannot do the same. In this case LimeWire cannot . It says it is connecting to the network and goes thru the eye candy motion but does not go anywhere. I have uninstallled it completely, wiped registry entries of it, and then redownloaded a newer version of it and installed it and it is still stuck in never never land.
I am thinking because this being a former data server, it is part of a group of computers and maybe this one is looking for another computer and not the internet directly per se.

I note that when I initially fire the computer up from cold boot in the initial DOS boot, I see F 12 NETWORKING instead of F10 so I am guessing the change has got to be back there. I am unfamiliar with that so some guidance would be appreciated.

The ports that Limewire uses may be blocked in software or hardware.

It's a good idea to do a fresh OS load so that you know how it's configured.

do not have OS disc to wipe and reload system. Is there a way around that?

You are supposed to reinstall fresh after any sale. You don't have to use what came with it. You can get a copy of Win2000 or Win2000 Server for free if you look. You can use XP too. Just be sure to pay for that one.

Limewire is full of viruses and spyware. Be sure to run AVG and ThreatFire.

I take back my ThreatFire recommendation. It's a CPU hog. I would use AVG and Online Armor. They are both free.
