| Connecting Two Routers (Wirelessly)
Hello there, I just recently bought an Xbox 360 and wanted to hook it up to the internet for Xbox Live (I don't have the wireless adapter). The problem is that my wireless router is up on the 2nd floor while my Xbox 360 is on the first floor. I don't have a cable long enough that will wind around the house and reach the router. What I do have is a Dell Wireless router just lying around and my question is if I can use that router as an access point to connect to my up stairs router. Here are the model numbers: Router Upstairs, Main Router
D-Link DIR-615 (It's an N router) <----Ethernet Wire----> Modem
|
| Wireless Signal
|
| Router Downstairs, Access Point Router
Dell Wireless Router 2350 (WRTA-108GD) <--Ethernet Wire---> Xbox 360
Well that is essentially the model. I know a bit about networking but everything I tried seems to fail. So, can anyone present to me the settings that I need to use for this setup to work? As well, would I (or should I) keep the WAP keys on the router for wireless security?
What I was trying before was disable DHCP on the dell, setting the same SSID. Then on the Dell router I would set it's gateway to be the same as the IP on the main router. |

You need to set the Dell up as an access point/repeater from the D-Link. You do not have to set up security on the Dell - leave it at default. The D-Link is doing all of the "heavy lifting". Documentation

Thanks, I got that part. But what are the actual settings to use so that Dell router connects to D-Link wirelessly? Right now it's just doing nothing.
*edit*
Sorry saw the link!! TY very much |

Well, gave it a try, but step nine says: Quote: |
Plug an Ethernet cable from the existing local network into any LAN port on the router.
| So I'm guessing that it means I need to have my Dell router plugged into my D-Link router using an ethernet cable? I wanted to make it so that it connects wirelessly since the two routers are placed floors apart. |

No - plug the XBox into the Dell router locally. That's what it is saying. The Dell router should be near the XBox. |

Ah gotcha, thank you, you have been a big help.
*edit*
Well tried everything, just won't work. The Dell router doesn't seem to want to connect to the D-Link unless I physically connect it with an ethernet wire.

You did plug the xbox network cable into one of the LAN ports of the router? Not the WAN port! |

Yup, was using the LAN port. But the problem is, the Dell router is not connecting to the D-Link. Is there any way to force it to connect?
Also, when I go to assign a static IP to my Dell, I notice that there are two mac addresses I can use. One is for LAN mac and one is for WAN mac. Which one should I use? I found the option make the Dell into a Wireless repeater. Not sure if that will help.
I'll post a few SS of my setup options in a few minutes. |

I am limited to the same document that you are.
Is it set to Access Point mode? You should really go through each step over again carefully. Setting it to Access Point mode should deactivate the WAN port.
WAN typically means Wide Area Network and applies to the WAN (Modem) port on the back. You should be avoiding that port. The XBox must be connected to another port. Since the WAN port is not being used, it's MAC address is not important. If you are going to set an IP to a MAC address, it should be anything BUT the WAN port, so use the LAN address.
Set the fixed IP to a number as some IP address at least 5 higher than the IP your primary wireless PC.
Go over each step again carefully. |

Well, here are the screenshots of my setup: Dell
Don't think this one is too important.
DHCP disabled on Access Point router.
The IP settings and Subnet. Did not put anything under Default Gateway.
General Settings. I noticed I have those two MACs and then 1 more is behind the router itself which ends in ***A6
WiFi settings on the Dell (AP). MORE NEXT PAGE
