Why is Cisco the best?

I'm under the impression that Cisco is regared as the market leader in enterprise networking.
Why is this and how do they hold the title against their competitors?

Two things:

IOS and Cisco's ability to purchase new technologies developed by smaller companies and incorporated into their networking devices.

There are other networking companies such as Xtreme and various companies i forgot the name of.

3com pretty much is out of the race in my book.

Does that, in turn, make Linksys the best for Home and Small Office networking?

Im bias to that question as all the home stuff I have used and loved is linksys.

From my understanding Linksys is still doing its own thing with the Cisco name. That is up to the home user.

My understanding is that Cisco acquired Linksys in 2003 or thereabouts.
Therefore, it should be the same technology for a different market.

As far as I know, no linksys home routers have anything close to what IOS is like.

Yes I run it on multiple WRT54G routers, I've settled on tomato until it pisses me off like DD-WRT did.

I'm not sure what that has to do with Cisco since its a third party firmware

I just wondered how well you rate it (DD-WRT). Would you say it's the best for home networking?

Depends on the home user needs. I was using DD-WRT with a bunch of friends for a vpn solution between us.

For a regular user doing web browsing and email, no i wouldn't recommend it. To someone who might actually use the extra functions. Sure its great (as long as your router supports it!) You might want to check out Tomato if you are interested in third party firmware. Tomato Firmware | polarcloud.com
