Xbox Live Wired connection (help needed please)

I'm having problems connecting a friends xbox to live. He is using a wired connection via a Netgear ASDL modem. He does have a PC but this is in another room. We have plugged the xbox directly into the modem with an ethernet cable and connected the modem via a filter into the phone socket.

This should be straight forward but the xbox will not connect. It fails on the IP address but upon checking the settings it HAS actually found an IP address. I was advised by Microsoft support to get IP address from ISP whic I did but this also does not work.

As he is with Tiscali we have to put in user names and passwords for their account but when this is done the xbox cannot find an IP address at all.

What am I doing wrong????

The router is responsible for supplying the IP provided it has DHCP enabled.

If you log in to your router you will be able to see exactly what IP address is assigned to what machine. You might need to to turn on your Xbox for this. Also make sure your router firewall is not stopping online gaming connections.

What is the model of your router? What do you mean you have to put in the usernames for the account? The username and password for the broadband account go into the router.

We are not using a router. We are just using a modem. Mine is connected with just a Virgin Media modem and finds the connection straight away. Can't understand why his is different?
