| Print Server on windows SBS 2003
Is setting up a windows small business server 2003 as a print server possible for a peer-to-peer network setup?
I add a client computer in my server management tool, hit next a few times, it gives me the option for installing the print drivers on the client computer. It tells me to go to the client computer and type http://SERVER/ConnectComputer into IE. I do this, and IE just gives me an error, no new printers
Is this because this feature doesn't work with peer-to-peer setup? |

Open "My Network Places" and find the server. Open it and double-click the printer. Easy-peasy.

I don't quite understand the purpose of a printer server. If I have to do that, why would I want the small business server to have the printers on it. It would make more sense to just have the computer talk directly to the printer.
Is having a print server only useful if you have like hundreds of people trying to print stuff at the same time, so that the server can handle that when the printer wouldn't? |

A printer server is used mainly to control permissions of the printers (what can people do and cant do) and to create printer pools (if one printer is back up on jobs a secondary printer will pick up the extra jobs)
However no matter what type of setup you use, if you share off printers with a printer server or from a client pc. Any machine that doesn't have a printer is gonna have to map out to shared printer. |
