freaking dells!!!!

ok i reinstalled windows xp pro on this old dell. downloaded all the updates internet was working fine. service pack2 seemed to install ok. but now i cant connect to the internet. i reinstalled the ethernet drivers, still nothing. in fact when i try to enable the connection it doesnt even try it just shows "connection failed". what can i do?

Try resetting the modem. Also, make sure everything is plugged in correctly.

And, onboard ethernet (I assume that's what you're using) can die...go buy a PCI nic
