| Wireless to wired via Laptop
I just moved into a new place for the year, and we discovered the wiring meant our modem has to be on the first floor. We have a wireless router, but most of my things require a wired connection and I have no cables to reach. I'd like to set this up without spending anything, and here's what I have to work with.
I want my PC and Xbox to get access, they both have ethernet. My laptop has both wireless and ethernet and I have a DL-604 router. Both the laptop and PC are running vista.
I don't know the terminology or any of that, so if somebody can point me in the right direction of what to search for, that would great, but my theory is that I can have my laptop receive the internet wirelessly, and then pass that into my D-link router to the xbox and pc. Is that possible and, if so, really slow? How do I do it?
Thanks |

Try downloading a program called NAT32, which will provide network address translation for your laptop. During setup, specify the wireless connection to be your internet access point and link it to the wired connection. A successful setup will allow your wired devices to behave as though they were connecting to the internet directly. Good luck!

You don't need any application to share internet access through your ethernet (at least you shouldn't).
In Windows under the properties for your NIC there is an option which can be selected named something like "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's internet connection" under Sharing.

An alternative is to see if your the model of your current router also supports being an AP Repeater. With this in mind, you can have the wireless router downstairs do DHCP and the one upstairs just repeat the signal without doing any additional work. This should also allow for you to have additional wired ports upstairs in your new place for your PC and Xbox. |
