Connects to Network, but no internet?!

Hello!

Just purchased an HP dv5-1017nr at Best Buy today. I can't get the internet to work. It sees networks, excellent strengths, and even connects to them, but will not go to the internet. I tried two different houses. It shows that it connects to the network but stays stuck on "Identifying."

Exchanged for a new one being a noob, and this one does the same thing. I have a desktop and another notebook with Vista that works with my router, so any ideas why this isn't working?! I really need the internet for school that started on Monday (I'm a college student.) Here are some settings someone else asked for:

If you click here you can see how it says "Identifying." http://img53.imageshack.us/img53/6023/connectionnc5.jpg

Thank you kindly!
Shane

It's not connected. The 169.254.x.x address is one that windows automatically assigns the interface if it cannot acquire one through DHCP. You either have the wrong encryption password setup for that particular wireless network, or maybe it has MAC address filtering enabled on it.

I checked the WEP key and it's correct. Under the D Link settings it says that MAC address filtering is off.

Any other suggestions? I am going crazy.

Thanks
Shane

are you using the "passphrase" are are you entering in the actual hex value for the wep key? I've come across many instances where the passphrase would not work and you need to enter in the actual hex value.

What do you mean? The "WEP Key" is 1234567890, so that is what I type in.

It connects, but stays stuck on "Identifying" and will not connect to internet.

Thanks

I thought the WEP key was 5 characters.

No, wep keys are either 10 (64bit) or 26 (128bit) characters in ther hex format. Dave, are there any other computers that ARE able to successfully associate with this wireless router?

Sounds to me like you aren't connecting to the correct router, I'd double check that, also as Ramon said are either of your other computers connected wirelessly? What happens when you connect it wired? Have you tried setting up a static IP?
