locking down NIC's

Hey all , a couple of friends that i work with say that locking down the NIC on all of your computers,(setting the proper speed on your card to either 10half,10full,....., as apposed to auto detect) would increase the speed of my data transfers on my lan greatly. I guess my question is this true or just opinion. thanks all.

Part of the problem is if you have an auto detect 10/100 switch, and the nic is set to auto, the two will take time to figure out which settings are correct. I have run in to this problem on my system network. I've set all nics to 100mb and let the switch auto detect.

I don't think this would make a difference in data transfers unless your NIC is improperly detecting the wrong media state.

...but, if you know your system is working at 100 then locking the media state would make boot up a tad faster. You just have to remember it is manually set in case later on you get dropped off the network due to changes made outside your PC (i.e. Switch ports are changed to 10 or your connection is moved to another switch that is only 10). Troubleshooting a dropped connection could prove elusive if this setting were forgotton

i dont see how it could make a difference. I mean autodetecting your CPU to 800 mhz isnt any faster than setting it in the BIOS to 8x100. Its gonna detect as the fastest setting anyways so i dont think it would matter. It might take a sec or two to auto detect but its gonna do all that during boot up so its not like ur gonna have to wait for it. They only reason i could see to set if is if you were having some type of problem.
