    LAN Bandwidth tester

    Heya,

I have a wireless connection down to the basement. From there it plugs into the router to a cable modem. Well lately our connection has SUCKED lol, and I just want to make sure it is in fact the wireless that is causing the problem and not just a stupid faulty wire. I dont have a spare wire on me so wanted to know where I can find a free easy bandwidth tester for LAN. I don't want a internet bandwidth site to test my internet speed.

Also with a bandwidth tester, that tests from your PC to the site correct? not from the cable modem to the site?

    Thanks

Can't Netstat Live do that? I think so...I'm not sure. Check it out.

arghhh its crashing everytime I open it
Sounds like that might help.. guess I can try to reinstall...

I did find another nice little utility though...
    http://itcan.programmer.nl/

doesn't help me in the slightest for this problem, but nice for monitoring network traffic... and free

Netstat Live is a nice little proggy, Out! It shows quite a lot of info about the LAN and remote connections - you can even show a ping and trace jumps to a site! Cool!

Pity you can't open it vass. I got it working in both winNT4 server and winXP Pro no worries.

Yep I got it working, but I dont' know how to make it show me which hop is the bad hop
I did a tracert in dos but it doesn't count the WAP (just a switch) as a hop, instead the first hop is my router (which makes sense but it sucks lol) so its not going to show me exactly where the degradation is within my lan :/
That's why I was hoping to be able to d a bandwidth test between me and the switch, and then between me and the router to see where I'm losing packets the most.
my connection and my roommates connection is just awful.. but my other roommate (wired straight to the router) says he's ok.. so I'm wondering if I have a bad cable to the switch or if my switch just SUCKS (WAP11 linksys)
I'm thinking of downgrading the firmware on it, see if that helps.. that firmware upgrade I did last time was just awful and screwed up quite a bit.
right now I'm doing a ping -t to see if I'm dropping any packets and so far so good.
I'm doing one screen going to the switch, and one to the router... if anything I'll leave them both running all night to see which one drops packets... (yes I know if the ping to the switch drops one, the one to the router SHOULD drop one although they're not the same packet but you'd think being wireless that a burp will be a burp across both pings)
Is there a specific packet size I should test with?
Just really frustrated with this wireless

I'm not sure about the average home use WAPs, but the WAPs I use come with a diagnostic tool to check for packet loss, signal strength, and noise for both the wireless client and AP.

yeah it comes with one for signal strength, but not really for packet loss
just says 67% signal strength and 57% link or something like that... its not real great.

Are you sure about Sandra? I've got it from a PC Gamer CD from several months back and it will test network bandwith on mine... Maybe that was a special from PCG?? I know there are several things that DON'T work (ie. Buy the Prg)....
