Question
wired and wireless together

I have an older desktop connected to DSL through a Versalink 327W modem/router. Verizon recently helped me configure the modem/router to accommodate a new wireless laptop, but the range is severely limited. Having purchased a D-Link 655 wireless router, I wonder if there is a way to use it for the laptop without interfering with the Versalink modem/router.

Perhaps ensure you don't have anything interfering the way between the router and the laptop. Things that affect the path could be things like wireless home phones, microwaves, other wireless devices, etc. It should help with the range.

"No." You will have to run a network cable from the modem to the router. Set up the wifi one in "Access Point" mode.
