connecting 2 vista computers together

hi,

I recently bought 2 new vista computers. I want to connect them together (lan), but just can't seem to do it. I'm new to vista and don't know anything about it but used to be able to lan xp computers. Here's what I do:

Connect the 2 computers together using a cross-over cable. Edit the IP's in the Local Connection to 192.168.0.1 (for 1st comp) and 192.168.0.2 (for second comp). They are both in the same group - 'WORKGROUP'. They are able to see each other when I click 'view network computers and devices' but when I try to access either one of them the connection times out and says it is unable to access the computer. I have also tried to ping them and again it times out.

I'm pretty sure all my security functions are down (e.g. firewalls etc.) so don't think this should be a problem. I've scoured forums and spent hours trying different things .. maybe I'm missing something simple and I've overlooked it. Anyway help would be greatly appreciated!!

Do you have norton security installed on the pc?

Since you are not too sure on the vista firewall

thanks for the reply. after all that it seemed to be the mcafee firewall. either that or something called netshare which i enabled.

What do you have the subnets set to since you setup static ip addresses for both machines
