getting xp and 2k to see each other
alright... i am being a very nice person and i installed xp for a friend of my girlfriends on her laptop. she had me previously, so i'm sure you can understand why i was so willing to take the job.
anyhow... when i was in me, i had no trouble getting it to see my 2k desktop. plugged both into a hub (netgear DS108 that a friend lent me for this), booted up the machines, made a share on my drive, and presto, everything went swell.
now that i have xp on the laptop, i can't get it to see my desktop. workgroup name is set the same, i logged in with the same user/pass, and also installed netbeui off the xp cd.
what do i need to do now?

Re: getting xp and 2k to see each other
If you trying to use the laptop with XP to access shares on the W2K desktop then it sounds like you have done the right things so far. The NETBEUI normally isn't needed but it shouldn't hurt right now.Originally posted by storm2k

Try using the Search feature to search for the other computer by name (takes a few clicks to get to search for a computer by name but it's there).
If that doesn't work, test ping each other by IP address.
BWT, if any software firewalls are enabled it could be stopping this from working.

I'm hoping your girlfriend is not an avid fan of TechIMO, 'coz that read a little strange...

Try go into My Network Places, and go through the "Set up a home or small office network." I had to go through that for my XP machine to see others in the workgroup.

do you have the built in firewall for XP on?

i turned the firewall feature off in xp when i took it off my cable modem and then rebooted.
i will try the wizard thing. it would be nice if this could just work nice and smooth.
hehe and no my girlfriend doesn't come on here, so she would not have seen that.

sorry storm, it was a walk in
back to your question:
I don't own winxp, but I have a friend with the msdn deal and he ran a licensed copy on my current linux box on a 3 pc lan and we just did everything at the install wizard (other 2 pcs on w2k)
everything was there using the workgroup and ip numbering, all behind a linksys router on xdsl
it worked fine but I didn't care for it much so back went linux for playing around with
my set up at that time was 2 pc s on w2k pro with ip addies from the router defined by me, xp pro with password (
) on a fresh install (older machine) - all shared folders immediately accessible
as far as linux goes, I've had a few, but still playing the field
hope you get it sorted dude

ok... i was able to get the desktop to ping the laptop, but the laptop cannot ping the desktop. i still can't get them to see each other. why is this so complicated?

sounds like the desktop still has some type of firewall running (sometimes ZA can cause this if it doesn't uninstall right). If one still is running then it is working as expected (blocking network traffic).

even if you have zone alarm (pro) you can go into the advanced settings and add the ip of the trusted pc(s) on your network
other thoughts:
1) as I said before I don't know xp that well, but is there a master browser issue here - perhaps DVNT1 can answer that
2) does the router act as the dhcp server? have you disabled dhcp in networking on the 2 machines?
this sounds harder than it should be

Until you can get ping to work in both directions I would have to assume there is still a software firewall causing a problem. It is likely that problem will also prevent the computers from sharing information both ways.
Like the jester mentioned, add your LAN (and.or PC IPs) to the trusted zone to help prevent ZA from being a problem.

i'm not using a router, just a hub.
needless to say i'm really REALLY unhappy about this. this should not be this complicated.
