    Internet Sharing Cannot Be Enabled

    Hey Guys,

I'm trying to get my Xbox 360 connected to the internet via my computer which has a wireless internet connection. I've heard this can be done by just connecting your Xbox 360 to your computer via Ethernet cable and enabling 'Internet Sharing'. This saves me buying a very expensive Xbox 360 wireless adapter (bargin!).

The problem I'm having is enabling internet sharing. I right click on my wireless connection, go to properties then advanced and I check the 'Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection' box - when I do this an error box comes up and says this:

"Internet Connection Sharing cannot be enabled. A LAN connection is already configured with the IP address that is required for automatic IP addressing."

To be honest I'm not entirely sure what this means but I've tried changing the IP address settings on both the LAN connection and the Wireless connection. Changing IP address settings on the wireless connection just results in the internet connection disconnecting. And changing the LAN IP address doesn't seem to help either.

I've searched through the net for help but nothing seems to work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I don't know much about networking and don't particularly want to fork out for a very expensive Xbox 360 wireless adapter.

    Cheers,
    Mr.Duck

I'm using XP. Think I'm getting close to figuring it out. I've some how got to change my own wireless IP address .. maybe by accessing router or contacting ISP? and change it to something like 192.168.1.1 as it is now 192.168.0.10.

As when I try to share the internet it says it is going to have to change the LAN IP to 192.168.0.1 and I think thats where the conflict is, on the penultimate number (0). The penultimate number on the LAN IP and wireless IP need to be different. Hope i'm making some sense there.

yes ICS uses 0.1, which is gonna be a problem.

ICS isnt really designed to be used INSIDE a network, its designed to be used as the gateway for all computers behind it

Your wireless IP number for the card is...? Look in the Control Panel/ Network Connections.

You don't have the xbox plugged into the computer when you enable ICS, do you? Don't.

There should be an option screen in the xbox to set the IP address to DHCP or automatic. Use that.

A crossover lan cable might have to be purchased.. unless its auto sensing.

You may have some latency and/or lag issues when using wifi as your source of Internet to the xbox... I have used ICS from a laptop to a desktop once and playing COD4 online. When refreshing the server list it would mess the entire connection up. That might have been attributed to my Intel card though.

Another thing is that if you have the Windows firewall on you should make sure that the "Don't allow exceptions" is unchecked. This will cause a computer not to connect. In this case a xbox.

Shared connection with a gateway device (combined modem and router) Gives you an idea.

    Related to..IP conflict..
