| Wireless network, problem and posible solution help
Yes, the problem's as confusing and complicated as the title.
Basicaly, ive been running a wireless network in my home for over a year now, never encountered any problems, untill yesterday.
The router downstairs decided to stop connecting to the internet all together, i cant connect to the settings (192.168.1.1), nor will it do anything other than realise im connected to the computer (its a D-Link DSL-2640B router).
So, guessing its broken, i contact a friend and borrow his Netgear one (DG834GT), hook it up, can access the settings (192.168.0.1), entered my username and password and it refuses to connect to the internet as well. From what i can see its not even detecting my DSL line, since i recieve no error messages, nor any form of conformation that it has been unsuccessful in connecting.
Ive changed all cables, and the only thing i can do is access the Routers settings. the Wireless network it's creating is working fine, i can connect to that from the other computer, it's just not connecting to the internet.
I try a third router (Safecom GWART2-54125), and the same problems, Creates a stable Wireless network, but no internet access.
I then revert back to my old wired modem (Speedtouch 330), and the computer successfully connects to the internet.
I've contacted my ISP (Demon Internet), and they supplied me with a list of settings i needed to configure, which were all correct allready.
So, i have a working internet connection through an old modem and a stable wireless connection running at the same time...but not a combination of the above.
So, have any of you the slightest idea why three different routers would seem to be finding the same problem?
Or, if that can not be answered, is there a way to bridge the connections between the two networks, meaning the wireless network could use the internet connection through the modem?
Aditional Information:
Internet Connection: ADSL 8mb/s internet connection
Location: UK
OS: Windows XP (this computer), windows Vista (remote computer) |

If you plug a computer into the modem, you get internet correct? If so, sounds like a misconfiguration on the router somewhere for the dsl connection. |

Highly doubt it, i got a list of about 8 different settings from my ISP, that were essential to make sure they were correct. I only needed to chage one (forget which one now, but from 1435 to 1500), so the settings my ISP require seem to be in place, tried on the two routers i can gain access to the settings on anyway.
Strange thing is...If it IS a config problem...then why did my router suddenly stop working, and two more refuse to work either?
I used factory settings on my D-Link router...So it's no way a problem with default settings triggering something.
when i try to do a Setup wizard with my Netgear router, it comes up with:
"
The Wizard was unable to establish a connection.
Please check the DSL cable before continuing.
"
Which, obviously, is in. This seems to be the problem with all three routers, but the same cable works fine in the modem. |

So if you plug directly into the router or modem do you get any internet?
Also I thought DSL MTU used 1492 (because 8 bytes is used for the header authentication data). Never had ADSL before so I cant help out in that aspect. |

If i set up the modem in the normal way, i get internet, Router in the normal way...Nothing.
But i can run both along side eachother...So i have my wireless network running, and internet through the modem, but i cant find any wayof accessing that internet pathway from the remote computer.
Anyway, i really need to get off to work. Ill check back on the tread in a few hours, in the mean time, any questions you could ask, or advise anyone could give would be fantasic. Im missing Naxxramas Raids! |

If you plug directly into the modem with your computer and get internet, then there has to be something up with the router. I'm still guessing router configuration error.
As for why it suddenly stopped? Not sure, power outage maybe? Router getting old? |

Change in ISP config sounds most likely. I assume your phones work fine (no noise) |

I'm in the same boat. Last Sunday, going fine, suddenly, no internet. I connect with just the DSL modem/router and it works fine. Back to router, doesnt' connect. I found if I did an ipconfig /release and then an ipconfig /renew, it would work but I had to do that every time I lost th4e connection. I called a tech friend and he said our ISP had changed somethings at their end.
Oh, well. |

| Hmm...you're probably correct with my D-Link router, it is over a year or so old. But the other two? the Netgear router was only brought 1 month ago, and work's fine around my friends house, and the Safecom Router has never been used. I got configuration information from my ISP, and set it up using all their config's...But alas, Same problem. Quote: |

| This would seem to be the problem...But Demon are adament that they have changed nothing, and my connection is healthy. Quote:

| Aye, ive had two tech friends say the same thing, im little savvy my self...and to be honest, it seems like the only cause...There's no reason i would have to manualy configure advanced setting on brand new routers other than if my ISP had screwed around with something. hmm. makes no sence that it just doesnt find an DSL line...there's no acknowledgement of any interaction with anything, other than its self.
Ill have to spend some time on the phone with my ISP and find out what's going on, then get in touch with netgear, and see what they can do with the settings that demon suggest. I have a feeling ill be going back and forth with this one for a while. Ill keep you posted.
thanks again for the words of advice people, Any more would be a great help. |

Ok, ive been in contact with my ISP...We tried everything, connecting with all three routers, and with the modem, isolating the line, so there would be no conflicts, Even removing the front panel of our phone line wall socket to use the hidden mysterious phone line connection type thing.
Nothing. Squat. He was completly dumfounded.
Basicaly, when you put a DSL cable into a router, it automaticaly tries to syncrinaise with the remote server, which then (on pretty much all routers) Switches on the ADSL light, accepting the fact that there is a connection, and you are ready to connect with the internet.
when i connect my modem, he could see that the Sync was attempted, accepted, then the internet connection "hand shake" occured when i was asked to conect...letting me on the internet. But, with all three routers, not a single sync was attempted, nothing was coming out of my phone line and attempting to connect to the server.
It's simply come down to trying a new ADSL line splitter...which even he said is simply absurd, since it allready accepts this connection type with the modem, but we should try everything.
People...What the hell is going on? |
