Do I need external grade?

Hi,

I'm gonna be digging a trench and burying some CAT 6 UTP solid cables in the ground. I will use guttering pipe and they will probably be about a foot down. My question is do i need to use the 'external grade' CAT 6 or will standard CAT6 UTP solid suffice because it will be protected by the guttering?

Thanks.

I would go with the external grade anyway. I did a job like that once but it was an alarm system. I brought a crew to dig the trench and some techs laid a cable in the ground on a bed of sand that I provided. No conduit was used at all. You could probably do the same.

I agree with Gaupo, Plowman, although, I would use a conduit to keep any buggers from eating away at the cable.

You should get Direct Bary cable, this is insulated against the elements as well as stronger protection on the exterior to prevent some chewing. In addition, you do realize that the maximum length you can stretch ethernet is 300 feet. If you plan on going near this distance, you may want to give us more information on WHY your trenching so we can come up with alternatives.

As nemowolf pointed out there is a distance limitation when it comes to cabling. Like he said, what is the distance you are looking at and what is the usage?

I do thanks. It's nowhere near 100m. As I said, thanks for your advice.

Internet connectivity, file sharing, and a NAS drive will be doing twice daily backups.

That's got to be the strangest thing i've heard of. I mean. I take on some strange projects. (a guy wanted a rack in his bedroom by his bed, who knows if he's ever slept since then) A trenched cabling job for an outside NAS? Oh, well, to each his own!

That doesn't seem too odd to me.
An external site is better than having a backup room in the same building.
