| Vista: wireless network not saved
All of sudden, Vista on my Lenovo ThinkPad R61i won't save my wireless network auto log on.
After every boot, I have to choose my wireless network despite checking "Save this network" and "Start this connection automatically."
This happened seemingly out of nowhere after months of being able to connect automatically.
# The type of connection to the Internet: DSL
# The Brand of Modem and its Model Number the router is connected to: Zoom
# The Brand, Model, Hardware Revision of your Router and include the Firmware Version: Linksys WRT54GL (v. 43011)
# The Method of connection your problem computer has to the Router: Wireless.
# The Connection in use on the problem computer: Intel PRO/Wireless 3945abg Network Connection
# Operating system and version and Service Pack Level, if any. Ex. Vista Home Premium x32 Edition Service Pack 1
# Software Firewall in use: Comodo Personal Firewall
# Also if any Anti-Virus Program or Spyware Program is actively protecting your computer: AVG 7.5, Windows Defender
Thanks. |

Welcome Klaatu.
Try and remove the network SSID from your list of available networks, reboot.
Search for available networks and re-enter your information.
See if this does the trick.
~please don't double post~

On the Linksys Basic Wireless Settings screen, there exists an Enable/Disable option for Wireless SSID Broadcast. It is currently set to Enable. Are you suggesting to choose Disable instead? Won't this compromise my wireless security? Thanks. |

No,
When you view a list of available networks, networks you have connected to should automatically display. Removed the network from that list (as if its gone forever), reboot the machine, and Search for available networks in your current location. The network should populate, and re-enter your settings. (kinda like uninstalling/re-installing) |

In Network & Sharing>Manage Wireless Networks, no profiles appear despite having logged onto one or two previously and choosing "Save this network" and "Start this connection automatically."
Anyway, I selected Disable option for Wireless SSID Broadcast, rebooted (ThinkPad and router), had to connect to a network manually, and chose "Save this network" and "Start this connection automatically." And once again, no profile was saved.
Wouldn't one conclude that my Vista Wireless Management is corrupted because it apparently can't save profiles any longer? |

Okay, thanks for your input.
This issue is a nuisance if anything and apparently no-one has a pat answer short of Vista reinstall. I've posted this on at least four other forums. Because everything else functions fine on the machine - for Vista standards, anyway - a reinstall just ain't gonna' happen. |

Do you have all the latest updates installed for vista? Do you have the wireless card manager software installed too? |

Klaatu, I had this issue once for myself (Vista ultimate on Macbook bootcamp), and it really comes down to what you can put up with. See if GZ's advice helps any, but deccide what's more important to you. For me, I only had WIN on my machine because I wanted to play SOSE during class. It wasn't worth the hassle for me, so I removed Vista and installed XP. If all your systems are working properly, is it really a big deal if you have to enter your password? |

And used to have card manager software installed until an "expert" told me to dump it and have just the driver. A reasonable suggestion since troubleshooting involves trial and error.
The expert also suggested I reinstall SP1 as it could clean registry of corruption so am going to download and try it.
Thanks. |
