| Pulling my hair out over this one
Alright, this one is still giving me a fit. I have a Compaq D510USDT (ultra slim) connected with a wireless adapter (Encore Electronics, USB). It connects to the network at 144Mbs. That's all good.
If I download a file, it runs great. No problems there.
The issue comes when I transfer files. No matter what machine I use, nor the connection of the machine, the 510 connections drops down to 39Mbs.
This computer doesn't have much. Base OS of XP w/service pack 3, drivers needed for video, and sound. I believe the CPU is 2.0 or maybe a little less, like 1.9 or so. Memory is 512mb.
The other computer I connect to is a laptop, dell inspiron 8200, 1.8ghz, 1gb memory, XP w/SP2, no other software running, (nothing that would zap the memory or tie up the hard drive usage). Connection on that one is also wireless, 54Mbps, trendnet pcmcia card.
I've tried the connection on the other machines including this one which is my strongest, and I get the same results. (this one has a wired lan at 1000Mbps, complete with Sata 3.0gbs drives.), so the issue seems to be with the compaq. I've tried disabling the zero configuration service and using the software that came with it, no change. I'm at my wits end on this one.
So... any thoughts?
PS: I don't want to install other software to do the transfers. I want to fix this issue. The more software that runs on that machine, the slower it gets.

What wireless router do you have? What wireless card is on the Compaq? Also I wouldnt really follow what windows zero config says about speed. Its not correct most of the time. |

Wireless card on the compaq ENCORE ENUWI-N
Wireless Router EDIMAX BR-6574n
The links take you to the product descriptions and reviews on newegg.com
I agree that the link speed isn't accurate, but going from 144mbps down to 39mbps can't be right. While downloading, it stays at 144 (what you see when you mouse over the connection icon), transferring files drops it down to 39mbps, (again, what you see when you mouse over the icon). The target machine (laptop) stays at 54mbps. |

Do you actually notice a difference in transferring speeds? Do you have the latest driver on the wireless card and the latest firmware on the router? |

No on the router, and yes on the card. I haven't updated the router at all to my knowledge. I don't install the router drivers to the computers or anything. I can connect to them via the web interface and that's usually good enough for me.
But I can try to update the firmware, assuming an update is available. |

I don't have any experience with that router nor ever heard of the company. It has two bad reviews of the router on newegg so good luck with that! |

Aside from this issue, it's been a great router. I rarely get a dropped connection, issues with transfers are limited to that one computer. So no complaints from me! yet. |
