Wired conection or Wireless for 4 computers
Hey folks
Well i seem to have a problem
I live with other people at home
an they each have other computers
there are 4 computers
2 laptops (both mac)
and 2 desktops (windows)
- 1 of them is a gaming build - 1100$ build
(2 of them are new , we only had 2 at the begging so thats why the problem just came up)
First of all i would want to know which would eb better for internet having 4 Computers
Wireless or Wired connection
what would be the advantages ? disadvantages?
If you should choose wirless? why did you choose it?
what should i buy with it? what good routers?
anything else i can buy to enchance performance
If it is a wired connection Why di you choose it?
Any addional things i can buy for it?
What should i do?
there are times the 4 computers are using internet at the same time
and i would like to have the maximum speed i could have.
thank you

Wired is more secure. I can't believe how vulnerable some of the wireless networks are. 4 PCs on one router won't hurt your speed.

What kind of distance do you need to cover? (multi story, laptops roam around the house)
Sometimes running cables in hallways are unacceptable to people. It all depends on what your needs are.

well yes its a 3 story house, the laptops will probably roam, but its not necessary.
wires around hallways arent an issue

Well for wireless you will want to put it someone where central to the building that will cover as much as it can.
Then when you figure out where that is, if you can run cables for the desktops great, if not wireless cards make it alot easier

I had to run a cat5 from one floor to another and to the other side of the house where for a customer. The wireless signal just wasn't strong enough. I drilled hole through the window frame and ran the cable along the siding downstairs and in another window. There are all kinds of ways to run cables.

I have the same problem, I have currently got three WAPs set up, and the signal on the third is only just strong enough to get to the furthest point from my W2k3 (server) and the master router.
I will be running a CAT5 cable to enable me to move it to the opposite end, and it will also be going through walls. The biggest difference will be that mine won't be going through any windows..!
I'm going to pass it under one door frame, then around another, then through an external wall and along the outside of the house (next to where an existing [cable] TV cable is) then back in through another part of the same wall and into the family room.
NOTE: I would've gone for the cable being either under the floor or through the ceilings, but I have under-floor heating and the ceiling in the office isn't accessable...
Drilling through a window..... I'll have to pass that on to my colleagues...
It's gonna be about as amusing as we found this: FI light need help!!! : Kawasaki ZX Forums: Kawasaki Ninja ForumI've seen the light... It was green, flashy and attached to a Network Interface Card...Whenever someone says "You can't miss it", I invariably do...

It might have been just below the window frame, I don't remember. Cable TV and telephone installers drill holes through houses all the time. What's the big deal?

i think most of youmis understood the statement,
most people do that
they drill a hole below the window frame since windows are your connection to the outside and you get you connection from outside. so you got to drill a hole thourgh the bottom of your window frame (mcuh less trouble thanthourgh the top of the door) and the send it around the house thourgh the top of the wall making it unnoticable
I could put some pictures in of holes below window frames,
all proffesional cable or internet or phone companies do that.
and if they didnt, still try to be a bit more respectful, people have feelgins and making fun of them is something very unpolite, especially from members that have been around for a longtime

Well im throwing an oxymoron back in your face. Telco's neither are professional or know how to do things properly. Just because someone else does it does not mean it is the right way to wire things. (the analogy of jumping off bridges or buildings come to mind.) You do realize that by putting a hole to the exterior you now have an A/C issue because both cold and heat are getting in and out of your house. You potentially have issues with sealing your window frame from rain, snow, hail, mold, mildew, insects, ... need i go on? This is why i asked if he bothered to use a sealant on the hole.
Do you laugh when a friend trips and falls? Do you laugh at them when they say something or do something funny? IF you answer no then you are far better a human being then I.

The reason I find it as shocking as I do, is that if it does go "through the window frame" then what happens if/as/when the people who own the property decide that they want to have the windows replaced...?
If the cable goes through the window, then they would need to cut the cable to get the window out, then re-do anything that you had done again...
Also, windows are (normally) the least efficient areas of a building, as they allow the heat to escape - even with double-glazed items. Drilling a hole through this would be daft. Drilling a hole through a wall, especially brick, (which is considerably better at insulating a building), is much less of an issue...I've seen the light... It was green, flashy and attached to a Network Interface Card...Whenever someone says "You can't miss it", I invariably do...

sorry to say this but in house holds there are many holes driven into walls to the exterior.
how else to you think you get the phone wire into your house?
how do you think you get electricity into your house?
cable?
internet?
drilling holes from the outside to the inside is the only way to do it.
(when done thourgh doors they get damaged alot wuicker)
