| Firefox random timeout & slow internet on vista & ubuntu
I'm experiencing a rather odd problem with Firefox on Vista and Ubuntu:
- Certain sites timeout or loose connection: "Error establishing a database connection".
- Random sites need several minutes to load. Sometimes I have to close Firefox and restart it to be able to load the page again... (until the problem reappears).
IE7 on the other hand is working flawlessly.
I've disabled IPV6 in Firefox but that didn't help either.
Below are my speedtest.net results:
IE7
Firefox
I'm at a loss. What could be the issue?
Thx in advance!

Disable ipv6 in Vista. Go to the control panel / network connections. Doubt it will help, but do it anyway.
Next, turn off all add-ons in Firefox, if you have any and restart Firefox. Still happening?
If so, scan that sucker!
Your speeds are fine, but that lag crap you describe isn't normal, especially if you say IE works "flawlessly" (But ubuntu isn't either?) Otherwise I'd tell you to reset the modem and check you cables and look for crappy connections or splitters. There should be a minimum of three in line with a cable modem. At least that's what they tell me.
Actually, what is your ISP speed suppose to be anyway. 6 MbPS I bet? Even though it say 15, that's what I get. Not sure about Slovakia .
Can you give us some site that do this?
What version of Firefox?

Speed results aren't really much of a diagnostic, run some pings to the sites or tracert something like that. Since this is happening across two different OS's I would suspect the sites themselves. The other suspect would be a common FF add-on, maybe something you are using with both OSs? Try FF with a new profile, its not likely an issue there but it rules out a bad add-on or something of that nature. |

Thx for all of your responses! I'm going through each one of them. It seems it might be a settings error on the router or its time to upgrade my cable modem. I've been told to submit my old modem for a new one free of charge! |

| You might try the tools I've been using
Not to brag or anything but here's my speed as of like 5 minutes ago. I have a 20/2 connection with turbo boost.
Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 6372240 bps
Upload speed: 1766160 bps
Download quality of service: 90 %
Upload quality of service: 97 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum TCP delay: 70 ms
Average download pause: 4 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 68 ms
Average round trip time to server: 69 ms
Estimated download bandwidth: 36800000bps <<<---Not bad eh?
Route concurrency: 5.775049
Download TCP forced idle: 79 %
Maximum route speed: 7710000bps
Detailed analysis : MyConnection Detail Analysis
You can find the test at ISPgeeks.com - Broadband Speed Test, Voip Diagnostics, Internet Bandwidth Forums just click on the diagnostics tools tab and you will see this test called TCP Speed Test and several others including one thats good for voip or ventrillo. After you run your TCP test check the Route Performance and see where the bottleneck is. I think you can even have the results emailed to your ISP. |
